Can one memory stick be used for both XP and Vista?

We have a new computer for the kids which has Vista on it. For word processing they use MS Works. My son came home with his memory stick and a document he had been preparing at school in Word on an XP system. He opened the document, edited it, and saved it but it will not open on either system again. The error message says that the path does not exist. Is the document lost forever?

Update:

The memory stick is brand new, too.

Sound like your memory stick bit it...yes, you can use a *working* memory stick on either system...just be careful with which program you save it. An Office 2007 docx is not readable by Office 2003 :)
