Should I trade my seasonal job for a permanent position, even though the pay is HALF as much?

My current job lasts only 6 months each year, and pays $12.81 per hour. There are no benefits and no chance to advance. I have a chance to take a permanent position in another job with good benefits including profit sharing and a 401K plan. But it only pays $6.25 plus commission. Overall, I would make more money on the seasonal job (including unemployment) and have the other six months per year to do whatever I want. Also, I am 42 so I really need to get some type of retirement going. So, which would you do?

I see your dilemma. Hmmm... taking a big picture perspective, I'd go for the permanent position with benefits--especially the 401K plan. But, honestly, I'd keep looking if I were you. Commission can be lucrative but it can also be unsteady and tight at times. Keep up the hunt, that's my best advice.

This depends on the location, the job, your performance and "need." A job at the service center keying in tax returns will almost always be seasonal. A job processing amended returns or installment agreements probably has permanent potential...

My dear fella, your priorities seem to be "out of whack". You can't have your cake and eat it too. Pick one and do it well. Decide if it is SECURITY you want at 65 or do you want to be making $12.81 at 65 but no security net. Pick one.

    Now go do it.
