What's a good commute motorcycle (40 miles in traffic)?

I have a Kawasaki EX500 and it's pretty good but I'd like to move up to something more comfortable. Ideally I'd like it to be very very quiet, smooth, and comfortable to ride (easy on the back). I don't want something that looks naked with a lot of metals, like the Harleys.

Anyone have recommendations?

I ride a Buell 1125R in Similar conditions. It is a GREAT motorcycle.

I think the EX500 would be an excellent commuter, it's light, quick and nibble. My daughter has one and I really enjoy riding it. Granted after an hour on the little ninja, I am ready to get my butt off of it but 40 miles would not be bad.

If your commute was all highway you may want something bigger but for traffic I would hang on to that EX500. I have both a sport bike VFR800 and an older touring bike. The big bike is a big bummer in traffic.

There's my .02 worth, good luck!

Yeah, the Triumph is a torture rack too...

Since you have a Kawi, why not stick to Kawi?? You can trade in the EX500 towards the 650 Ninja - more upright than a repli-racer, quiet, smooth and good torque due to the twin layout like your 500cc model. Cheap too.

Ive got the Kawi Z1000 model. I love it. But, its that naked look you dont seem to like... I do 32 miles each way in 45 minutes of dead stopped Bay Area traffuck.

Yamaha Morphous is what you would fall in love with. It is the best thing out there still being manufactured. Some would suggest the Honda Helix which is now out of production, but New 2007 models are still in a lot of dealerships. Scooters is the place to go for comfort and ease of use, not hing you have to fight on a scooter! :)

for a more relaxed seated position and nice affordability try the hyosung avatar 650 they are quiet, low slung, and look like a cross betwen the vrod and a suzuki intruder, this bike is less than 7000 new. It is a belt drive which eliminates chain noise, and they put out more torque than the 750 vulcans. If you are looking for a street bike more than a cruiser try finding a nice used Honda CB750 Nighthawk.

triumph speed triple 675. Smooth running as you should expect from the newer triumphs. 107 hp. So, you have a lot more horsepower. Tubless tires, fuel injection, liquid cooled. There are a lot of things that make this a nice bike. Just under $8,000. Try sitting on one to see how it fits you.
