Hi Twirl-
I am a Chorale Education Major and I have to do a lot of singing. Here are the things that really work-
Citrus, especially Lemon it helps clear the vocal chords, however it can also dry out the chords so don't go crazy.
If your throat is dry Honey is okay again don't go crazy.
I recommend the Herbal tea Throat Coat which you can buy at any grocery store it has all the ingredients you need to help your vocal help.
Gargling with warm [not boiling] Water with a spoon full of salt mixed. gargle and spit.
Drink lots of water.
Stay away from soda and sugar drink any diary will be very harmful to your throat health.
Drink water and eat lightly right before a performance and don't forget when singing, Warm Up! Warm Up! Warm Up!
Good Luck!

It's very possible to learn to sing well. You just need to know the right methods. Learn here https://tr.im/qBWov
Singing teachers will cost money and can be expensive so they're not for everyone. Singing can be learned so it's not an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing.
Whether you sound like crap or you're decent, I recommend this singing course. It's one of the best methods to learn to sing well in a short amount of time. It's all about using efficient techniques that work.

I think drinking tea with lemon and honey helps somehow. I know that that's what I drank before performances...and also when I had a sore throat. Personally, the tea made it feel like it was clearing all of the gunk out of my mouth and throat. Eww. Sorry if that sounds gross. I'm not that sure about food. Just don't drink or eat dairy. I know that my voice sounds messed up if I do that before singing.

Next, learn how to control your larynx to learn how to sing better. This larynx is the cartilage in the back of
your throat that you can see in the mirror close when you swallow. Relax the larynx and allow maximum amount of
airflow to the diaphragm.
If fact, some people say that controlling your larynx is one of the best things you can start doing to learn how to
sing better. Your vocal chords are also located here and you don't want to strain them so relaxing this part of
your throat is essential.
With just a little practice, you can start to learn how to sing better. Just by controlling your larynx and with
proper breathing technique, you will come a long way with your singing. It just takes a little consistent practice.
Singing Success is a program that I recommend because it gives you the proper knowledge needed to get better at
singing fast. You can learn how to sing better with the correct knowledge

Dairy products stick to your vocal chords... caffine is also bad. Water is the best choice. Definatly stay away from fatty foods.

It's true that dairy products will worsen it becuase it thickens up our mucus which can affect your singing voice.
Clear liquids are the best

I find that anything minty helps clear your throat before you sing. Definately avoid dairy. I know some people who also like to eat a piece of orange, but I've never tried it, so I can't say if it works or not.

Don't drink or eat Dairy products or eat potatoes before you perform. They leave a sorta felm in your throat. I've made that mistake before.

I've heard that any kind of dairy can make your voice nasaly sounding. I personally believe it.
