The Yankee Doodle Dandy was a patriot during the Revolutionary war. The British made up the song to make fun of them.

There are actually 2 Yankee Doodle Dandy's

The first is the one is the satyrical yankee of the patriotic song. First coined by a British doctor as a way to snub Americans.

    "Yankee Doodle's come to town

    For to buy a firelock,

We will tar and feather him

And so will we John Hancock. "

It was later adopted and adapted by the Yankees as a song of pride and patriotism.

The second Yankee Doodle Dandy is George M. Cohan. This is because a biolographical movie about him was called Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). It gained this name because of a famous piece Cohan did that was based on the song.

    Verse I

I'm the kid that's all the candy,

    I'm a Yankee Doodle dandy,

    I'm glad I am,

    So's Uncle Sam.

I'm a real live Yankee Doodle,

Made my name and fame and boodle

Just like Mister Doodle did, by riding on a pony.

I love to listen to the Doodle strain,

    I long to see the girl I left behind me;

    And that ain't a josh,

    She's a Yankee, by gosh,

    Oh, say can you see

Anything about a Yankee that's phony?

    Refrain

    I'm a Yankee Doodle dandy,

    AYankee Doodle, do or die;

A real live nephew of my Uncle Sam's,

Born on the Fourth of July.

    I've got aYankee Doodle sweetheart,

    She's my Yankee Doodle joy.

    Yankee Doodle came to London,

    Just to ride the ponies,

I am a Yankee Doodle boy.

    Verse 2

    Father's name was Hezikiah,

    Mother's name was Ann Maria,

    Yanks through and through,

    Red, White and Blue.

    Father was so Yankee-hearted,

When the Spanish war was started

He slipped on his uniform and hopped up on a pony.

My mother's mother was a Yankee true,

My father's father was a Yankee too,

    And that's going some,

    For the Yankees, by gum,

    Oh, say can you see

Anything about my pedigree that's phony?

    (Repeat Refrain)

That is a phrase going back to before the American Revolution. It originally referred to one from the American Colonies with pretensions of being stylish, assuming that there was no way to clean us up or dress us up to make us presentable in "polite", i.e. European, society. The phrase was then adopted and turned back against British during the Revolution in the form of the song "Yankee Doodle".

Interesting little tidbit Yankee Doodle Dandy...you remember when, in the song, you sing that "he stuck a feather in his hat and called it macaroni"? Apparently it was just becoming trendy to eat macaroni and the pasta became a slang term for something being trendy or cool. So by sticking feather in his hat, he was calling himself trendy.

James Cagney played George M. Cohan in the movie, one of the few movies left that haven't been remade. With the writers on strike, I'm sure someone is looking for the original script and Johnny Depp's phone number as I write this.

I think it refers to any of the colonists during the Revolutionary War, or just before it.
