buying a car?
i am a senior in high school right now. i recently recieved acceptance into a college in the city. city = i will NOT be needing a car in 8 months.
however, i want to do a lot & have a lot planned for senior year & my last summer "home" and with all my friends. i think it would be quite convenient to have a car. both my parents work so i cannot use a car except on weekends, as we only have 2.
i understand that some might see it as impractical, as college definitely wont be easy to pay for, but i'm thinking that maybe i can sell it at the end of summer? perhaps can i rent one for a while? i am only 18, but my records are in good standing.
i would just like some advice & thoughts. of course my parents don't want me spending money on something like this, but my boyfriend absolutely wants me to so he can stop driving everywhere b/c his car has nearly 160,000 miles on it & it's getting elderly. i need someone's OUTSIDE, unbiased opinion.
thank you in advance. ^_^

I think that is reasonable. The only problem is you can't always guarantee yourself that youll be able to sell it back to someone. You should always buy a reliable car when its used: japanese cars are always known to last long (i.e. toyota and honda). Also, remember youll have to worry about gas (which is super expensive with the 3$ or more price range per gallon). Its also good to have insurance and your pretty much screwed this car you get has problems.

Unless you are in NY State (IIRC, that's the one) you cannot rent a car. Most car rental places won't rent to anyone under 21 unless they're in the military. Those that will rent to those under 24 (and not all do) charge extra if you're under 24.
If you have space to park your car, what I'd do is leave it off the insurance when you're not there, and have it added to your parents policy (pay them the difference, if you must) for the weeks or months that you're at home. With a lot of companies, you CAN do that. Check with your insurer to find out.
If you're not going home every couple months, you should see if you can have someone start your car and run it a little while every month or two. Otherwise you should drain the fuel tank, and change the oil once you un-park it. You might also want a battery charger in case it didn't hold a charge.
If you can, I'd say get an old Honda CRX, Civic, Toyota Tercel, or Geo Metro/Suzuki Swift. They won't take up much space, they have reasonable carrying capacity, and should be able to take pretty much anything you're planning pretty well.
