Volvo sometimes doesn't start?

I have a 2000 Volvo S40. In September, the radiator and the cylinder head gasket both went kaput and I spent an arm and a leg fixing it. So now I'm constantly terrified something's going wrong with the car.

But since I took it in for work, the engine doesn't always turn over right away when I start it, sometimes taking a little longer, sometimes not starting at all right away (turn key, indicator lights on, nothing else) but then starting on the next try.

Any idea what this could be? Could they have done something when they were rebuilding my engine? Is it something easy to correct? Or should I fester in a big pit of anxiety? Just wondering how to calibrate my freak-out, thanks!

Update:

I don't want to suggest that I'm blaming the mechanic - they did do a good job, but I can't dispute that the car didn't have problems starting before they rebuilt the engine. I understand it was complicated work that took them two weeks, but given the level of complexity, I wouldn't be surprised if something knocked loose, didn't get fully reconnected etc. When I got the car back, the radiator had a broken fan and was still overheating, and the mechanic dealt with it immediately and with the proper concern. But since I know bupkis about cars, I have no idea of the causality here.

Sounds like the starter is failing, hard to know without more info . Dont blame the mechanic though. Ive accualy thought of changing professions because of this.... I bend over backwards for my customers and cutt them breaks when ever I can... When I get a diffcult customer, a 1 hour job sometimes becomes a 2 or 3 hour job. Just my way of weeding out the trouble makers.

This is one of the ways that starters go out, the other is by knocking loudly, followed by a loud whine. I guess it could well be the starter.
