a mathematical puzzle?

I call my college roommate after a few years to catch up. We're both

math geeks. Our conversation goes:

Sean: You have three children now? How old?

Jeremy: The product of their ages is 36.

Sean: I need more information!

Jeremy: Add up their ages, you get our room number in college.

Sean: Yes, I remember our room number, but I still need more information.

Jeremy: My oldest wishes he had a twin.

Sean: Ah, got it.

What are Jeremy's chidrens' ages?

    With the first quastion, friend understood that the ages are factors of 36.

    You could list all of them. But I am listing few.

    2 2 9

    2 3 6

    1 6 6

    3 3 4

    etc

    Obviously, he asked the second question because there are too many options. From second answer, he understood, adding these numbers in each option will give his room number. If you check against all options in the list, you will find each option has a unique sum except the following two

    229 =>13

    661=>13

    So 13 was their room number. He knew there is a twin already. But he was not clear younger ones are twins or elder. That is why he had to ask the third question. Friend answered that his younger once are twins. So it is clear.

    2 2 9 is answer.

    the ages r 9 & 2,2

    9*2*2=36

    9+2+2=13

    that was the memorable no of thier room.

    9,2,2 is the best choice, but why not 3,3,4 or 2,3,6?

    I'm assuming the younger two are twins - this is why the older one wants one.

    Also this adds to 13 - a memorable number, which is why he remembers the room number.

    (3,3,4 also works for twins, but they add to 10 which is not a memorable number).
