I thought the way the Yankees treated Joe Torre the last few years was disgusting. It was not his fault the team didn't make it to the World Series; the Steinbrenners just kept signing old players and put no focus into developing their own young players. Then, every year, they threatened to fire him. I mean come on. This guy won 4 straight World Series championships for you when the Yankees were by far the most talented team in MLB. You would think that they would consider that. Then, while they are offering huge contracts to others like A-Rod, they offer him a pay cut for a one year contract and unless they won the World Series, Torre would probably be gone the next year. I was estatic when Torre declined the offer and went to the Dodgers. He took the high road and went to a team where the owners aren't as big of jack*** as the Steinbrenners. Kudos to Joe Torre and wishing you luck next year coaching the Dodgers.

no not really. joe torre had an abundance of riches for years. year after year. he got the players that he wanted & he simply didn't win. why should the yankees keep someone that doesn't win & run up their payroll to 200 mil???? THE ONLY REASON WHY TORRE WASN'T FIRED EARLIER WAS BECAUSE HE LED THE YANKEES TO 4 TITLES IN 5 YEARS IN THE LATE 1990'S.
the yankees are in rebuilding while contending mode. they are finally adopting the model the twins , a's, & florida marlins are doing except when these players come up through the minors they are going to sign them to longer deals to keep them. some felt torre wouldn't be patient w/ the rebuilding plan. torre works his best with veteran players & an owner w/ a big payroll.
remember when torre managed the cardinals, mets, & braves. he didn't win because he's not a very good manager. he's a good manager w/ the right players ont eh team & a high payroll. torre will not produce the success he had w/ the yankees he will w/ the dodgers trust me fans.
the way the yankees fired him was suspect. we all know that george wasn't running the show because if he was torre would've been gone the day after the season was over. hank wanted to run torre out of town but he wanted to offer torre a lowball offer he knew he wouldn't accept then when torre wouldn't take it he could say well torre doesn't want to be a yankee. then when he went to the longtime rival dodgers it further made that statement truthful.

As a Yankees fan, I am thrilled to see Torre leave. He has run his course in New York, and he needed to be fired or step down. The last 4 season's have been marred by playoff collapses, and a new manager was needed.
After seeing what Joe Girardi did with the frickin Florida Marlins in 2006, I think that Girardi will have the Yankees rocking in 2008 and beyond.

i dont think it was disgusting.
Joe torre was paid a very large sallary to win the yankees and the steinbreiners championships and in the eyes of the steinbreiners he wasent delivering. Granted most teams would die to have a team with the suscess of the yankees since the late 90's but the yankees just have a higher standard. It just so happens in pro sports the manager or coach is always the fall guy for a teams lack of suscess even though he isnt playing

Not at all. Torre was overpaid, it's a simple fact he got less from the Dodgers than what the Yankees offered him. Torre's record as a manager was quite undistinguished prior to getting hired by the Yankees.
Torre is way overrated, he is either a liar or has admitted he 's incompetent with claims he didn't know his players weren't juicing. I go with liar, he looked the other way as steroid cheats were winning for him
Torre carved out a nice little side business for promoting himself as being an inspirational leader, but there are many guys who could had done as well or better with the Yankee money bringing in better players than what other teams could do.

yeah, it was pretty bad, but not to worry, the yankees will get their come-upance for that with the terrible season they are about to have
while they did really screw torre over, they, in a way did him a favor (by letting him get out of such a bad and unappreciative situation and allowing him to go to la where he will be revered the way he really should be) and they screwed themselves over a lot worse, anybody that thinks there is anybody who should get more credit for the yanks second half last year its torre, now that they have girardi things will be a lot different
people used to always talk about how torre was so good because he took the pressure off the players, he handled steinbrenner and the media and let his guys just play, girardi wont be the same guy, so their will be more pressure on guys like arod and jeter, they will have to start answering for their goofups now, it will get a lot worse, i will be amused to watch as this franchise falls apart, as players start pointing fingers and as the yankees play gets worse and worse, i will enjoy it a lot, then maybe yankee fans will realize what a bad idea it really was to let torre go, and they will realize that there team is very ordinary without him

I'm disgusted with what the media did to the fans over Joe Torre. They crammed that guy down our throats for a month when nobody outside of New York cares whether he ever manages or not.

I was disgusted but, Joe Torre is probably better off out from under the owners thumb. He will be successful in LA for sure!

Baseball is a business and Torre was not taking the Yankees to the World Seres so he had to go. It could have been handled better.

It didn't surprise me any. They had been threatening to fire him for quite some time. They didn't actually fire him but they made him an offer he couldn't accept.
I couldn't imagine any sum of money they could have offered actually that would make it worth coaching them. They have very good players, but I don't know if threatening and instilling fear in your manager is a good recipe for success. The Yankees are famous for airing out their dirty laundry in the public eye. Look how they treated Martin.
If you agree to manage the Yankees, you better have thick skin and the sense to realize that your job could be gone at any moment.
