When did you buy that computer 1987? Most graphics cards have more that that these days.
You need to get a new machine - it'll probably be cheaper than upgrading the one you have now.

248MB? sounds odd should be in 2^x MB.
anyway, check out www.crucial.com. it will scan your comp and tell you the kind of RAM your comp requires, you can also buy some RAM off them at the same time.
if you running xp you'll want about 1GB (1024 MB) or if it is vista you'll want 2GB (2048 MB)

From what you are telling us, you have 256mb of RAM. You have a 8 mb video card. Seems your system is kind of old.
It also depends onthe Processor. Pentiums are always faster but you made no mention of the processor speed.
More RAM is always better. The Operating system is also a factor.
RAM. add RAM if you can.

I presume you're on XP, as Vista wouldn't cope with that...
First off - more memory. Dabs.com is cheap.
Second; disk maintenance. Defrag, scandisk, delete unwanted files
third: delete unwanted programs; they all appear in teh registry, and slow things down
fourth; disable unneccesary start-up programs, and services.
