what should white women wear in Cairo?

I am tall, thin and blonde and wondering what I should wear to be culturally respectful and safe in Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Turkey. I don't want to have to wear men's big baggy tshirts if I can avoid it.

ok, first of all i didn't like the term "white woman", but let's leave it.

all you need to wear is respectfulcloths, nobody will make a comment if you wear normal (meaning western cloths), but it's not recommended to wear short skirts or shorts, they should cover at least your knee, but reality is that it's better if they are totally long. the shirt shouldn't have decolt. if you want to wear short sleeve no problem, but there will be places where you will feel that long sleeve in more appropriate. also many toursits make msiatke, they wear for example jeans and long sleeve shirt, but - you can see their belly or the shirt is totally transparent - it will not work :-)

but what i want to tell you is that if you will visit totally toursitic places then make it comfortable, and don't worry so much cause ppl got used to toursits and that western ppl have different habits.

btw, it i so nice that you asked, i wish more ppl would like to respect local culture. once i had a tourist who went to piramids in short skirt and top of bikini!!!!! i asked her to wear top (which was already amazingly small and didn't cover anything) and she said that her tour leader told her she wear what she wants. i asked her for his exact words and she replied: he said to wear normal :-) well if for someone it's normal to wear bikini in the middle of capital city (i don't even mention Muslim capital) then ok :-) hahaha

so really i appreciate your concern

I was in Egypt this past summer. I thought I needed to be covered but was a little weary because of the heat. Most tourists were wearing shorts and tank tops. I felt fine in that but wore lots of knee length skirts as well. You usually only need to cover up if you are going to a place where people currently pray. I usually try to be conservative, but was totally comfortable wearing shorts and tank/halter tops. Also, I have an Egyptian friend and she said that even when she is covered head to toe she is still harassed by the men. Little tip - always have a man with you. It makes a huge difference!

As long as you don't wear anything crazy it is fine, especially since you are blonde you are going to find a lotttt of attention on you since that is a rare thing.

Just don't wear like short shorts, or string tops.. all the guys will be staring like crazy and you might get some mild disturbances (nothing dangerous, but like guys making kissy noises at you and stuff, ugh).

You will probably find when you are over there that you will want to wear more modest clothes, it's annoying to have the guys all staring at you and you'll feel more comfortable. It is also more respectful to do so. Unless you are on the beach or something, but there everyone is wearing normal (american like i mean).

Pants (not shorts or a dress), and a long-sleeve shirt which is not tucked in. Allow the shirt to cover your bum somewhat. You need not wear anything on your head unless you go into a Mosque in which case you should wear a head scarf.

Just don't show a lot of skin. I personally feel it has less to do with respecting the culture and more to do with minimizing sexual harassment by local men.

I'd say don't wear mens baggy shirts, at all, any time, any where. You'd be doing yourself a disservice. Women in those countries are so fashionable, you'll probably be out dressed anyway! Seriously. But they do so in an elegant way. If you would like to be modest, without having to hide in an abaya- the long neck to ankle dress- like this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Linen-Abaya-long-muslim-... I would buy a mantu, like this: http://us100183143.trustpass.alibaba.com/product/1... Its a light weight fabric coat that skims just below the thighs. The mantu is fashionable alternative to the abaya in these countries and is preferred by the younger generation of Muslims. The best thing to do once you get to your destination is take a shopping trip to buy the cover ups, if you feel you need them once you get there. The Make sure your clothes breathe. Light linen and cotton fabrics are the best choices. 3/4 length sleeve is the best. And make sure if you're going to visit a religious place to take a scarf with you to cover your hair.

  • You can be in Egypt wear what you want as any country in the world is in Egypt from wearing hijab and also wearing a mini pocket Egyptian society has no particular in the clothing habits

  • Avoid showing skin. Many women wear skin tight clothes, but show no skin. Many tourists wear whatever they like but this can be offensive.

As I have put in many of my posts before, it is a good idea to take some time out to do a little research. Try these sites:

Wear normal casual clothes that are not too revealing.

By this I mean no exposed belly, no too short skirts or shorts.

It is OK to wear short sleeved cotton T shirts with a loose knee or more length skirt. Also pants are OK. In case of shorts they should be just above the knee.

    you need to wear clothes.

    hehehe, just kidding :D

okay......see now dear, no need for short skirts or very tight clothes......

no need for clothes that are sexy or revealing.

btw hun, these countries you've mentioned are just like the one you're coming from (whatever your country is.....i hope that we're not stereotyped in your country as being brute, savage, cannibals or uncivilized !!!!!! :-s )

you'll come and find that you're wearing more modest unrevealing clothes than many citizens here, so it's all about behaviour and manners :-)

but still, you can be targeted by some, for being a tourist, and harass with you.......but still this happens everywhere, not exclusive to specific country ;-)

from my heart, wish you a happy safe unforegttable and enjoyable journey in any country you visit sweetie :-)
