You drive 90 miles along the Pacific Coast Highway and then take a 5-mile run along a hiking trail in Point Reyes National Seashore. Your driving rate is nine times that of your running rate. Time for driving = 90 mi/9r

    Time for running = 5/r

    Total time = 3 h

    3 = 90/9r + 5/r

    3 = 10/r + 5/r

    3 = 15/r

    r = 5 mph = running rate

    9r = 45 mph = driving rate
