Oahu is probably the best for a short trip. It has all the famous things to see like Waikiki beach (which is very overcrowded), the Polynesian Cultural Center (a must!, it is awesome), the north shore beaches (not crowded at all, awesome waves, sea turtles etc. these are the very famous beaches like Banzaii Pipeline, Halaiewa, Waimea Bay, Sunset Beach) They are all awesome! Also make sure you eat some Mahi Mahi at Ted's Bakery at Haleiwa it is sooo good!
Other famous things on Oahu are Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Motsumoto shave ice, its also where King Kong and Pirates of Caribbean 1 was filmed.
There are waterfalls, places to go snorkeling, etc all over the island. Just get a rental car and go around it is pretty easy to get around there is basically one road that circles the island.
There are also some amazing hikes throughout the island. I hear that the big Island has everything that every other island has to offer but it is so big.
If I were you I would plan to stay most the time in Oahu and then choose 1 other destination island for a day or two like Maui or the big Island.

Once you choose an island get the "Revealed" book on it by Andrew Doughty and Harriett Friedman (Maui Revealed, Oahu Revealed, Hawaii the Big Island Revealed, etc)
Excellent travel guides with advice on where to stay, what to see and do, for all budgets. Look for the blue "gems" in the text.
You can find the book at Amazon.com or even try half.com!
