There are several objects that epitomize the cliched use of plastics, such as the plastic patio furniture chairs the seem to share many common design elements, no matter who manufactured them.

You see them in plastic white or green, sometimes use in outdoor seating sections of some cheap restaurants.

There was a fad, in the late 60s or early 70s that promoted the use of a bowl-like chair, single piece or molded plastic, with metal legs mounted underneath. They came in an assortment of colors and were accepted as normal kitchen dining decor.

In another era, there was a material called "bakelite" which was used to make radio and other appliance cabinets. It was also used to make ashtrays, pen holders, jewelry boxes and other accessories.

You could express your project by placing a selected, representative piece, standing alone in an undecorated, unadorned setting, with as little background as possible.
