Even when there appears to be a clear open and shut case / situation, it's normally very important to examine the deceased to make sure of what happened.

First, there is the potential that what appeared to happen is only covering up another crime. For example, the person appeared to be killed in a car crash, but a spouse was trying to cover up the fact that they beat them to death. Or that the armed robbers were caught with a .38, and the deceased was killed by Police Issue 9mm...

Second, is for evidentiary purposes. If a crime was committed, no evidence should ever be neglected. It's possible that in a clear robbery / murder that the defense will get a significant amount of evidence thrown out - the witness was unreliable, the police violated a search warrant, etc. Once that happens, they might need to go back to something that was initially unnecessary and could be related to the autopsy. If the body was cremated, they might not have a chance to exhume it or reexamine it.

Third is insurance / responsibility purposes. If someone died in a car accident, it's important to know what substances they had in their system. For example, it could look like one person was being careless or reckless and caused the accident someone right up until the autopsy shows that the 'victim' was drugged or doped up.

I'm not sure about armed robbers, but in a motor accident they would do it to make sure that something didn't cause the person to have the motor accident in the first place. Or that something didn't kill them first. I.E. - You have a heart attack first, which causes you to die and slam into another car.

There was a case at one time in which an accident had been believed to cause the death of a couple, but autopsy reports showed that they had been poisoned before the accident. Eventually it was discovered that someone in the backseat had injected them and left the scene.

It's because of cases like this that an autopsy has to be completed.

Physical evidence for prosecution most likely. The cause of death is not in question, but they need the evidence (like a bullet) to match up with a possible gun, so see who shot and killed the person.

Same thing with an auto accident. they need to see if the person maybe had a medical condition or test for drugs/ alcohol in the system to find a cause.

It can tell (in an accident) exactly what injury caused the death.

It can also (using lots of data like this) be used to design safer

automobiles. In a murder it can help determine what caliber

firearm was used and if a bullet is found in the body study of

the bullet can be used to prove which firearm fired it.

To assure that the cause of death was really the shooting or the accident.

If you die of a heart attack and then armed robbers shoot you....they didn't kill you. If you are walking across and intersection and keel over from a massive brain anuersym in the cross walk and then get hit by a bus.....you didn't die because of the bus, you died of natural causes and you have really bad, bad luck!

An autopsy - maybe they want to make sure the "rubbers" don't bounce back and do it again!

    :) couldn't resisit..

In that type of case - not sure....
