The derivative "shake & bake" denotes a military technique involving use of white phosphorus (WP), to drive the target out of hiding, followed by high explosives (HE), to kill them.

In Artillery, it means a mix of White Phosporous and High Explosive rounds.
In many training aspects of the military, it is used to refer to any quickly trained specialists or promotions as Shake and Bake NCOs in Vietnam and other examples mentioned by people above me.
It has more then one meaning.

"Shake & Bake" was slang for quickly trained non-commissioned-officers during the Vietnam War.
The derivative "shake & bake" denotes a military technique involving use of white phosphorus (WP), to drive the target out of hiding, followed by high explosives (HE), to kill them.
"Shake and Bake" is a slang term for a forest firefighter's personal fire protection shelter, because the firefighter under it is shaken by the wind created by the fire and baked by the heat of the fire.
In medicine, "Shake and Bake" is a term used by HIV patients to describe the side effects of some anti-retroviral drugs that cause them to become febrile and develop rigors.
In the funeral industry, "shake and bake" is slang for cremation, often used disparagingly when trying to push more expensive funeral options.
In engineering "Shake and bake" often refers to the environmental stress screening process where the unit to be tested is placed in an environmental test chamber and subjected to high temperatures and vibration.

In basketball, it is also slang for "shaking" a defender off and scoring a basket.

When I was in the Army (medical MOS) in the late 80s, we used "shake 'n' bake" to refer to Licensed Vocational Nurses who enlisted.
As soon as they finished AIT and thus qualified to work in their MOS, their civilian education and licensing gave them enough points to be promoted to Sergeant (E5).

We always refereed to OCS graduates as Shake an Bakes.

it was the accelerated training / promotion program. most graduated as E-4's but the top 10% graduated as E-5's. It was a disaster, they had the rank but no experience in leadership and many time were a danger to them selfs as well as their subordinates.
