1997 suzuki sidekick 1.6L problem?

ok.....the problem is that when the motor is cold, it doesn't want to start. it cranks slowly and tries to catch but it won't. i just put a new battery in yesterday, the fuel pump works, the timing belt is intact and on the gears, and the distritutor is providing a spark and the spark is getting to the plugs (which are a couple days old). the alternator is good (it's been checked). if the motor does crank and runs, after it runs and warms up, i can cut it off and it will start every time. this has me, and everyone i know stumped

Have your starter checked. It sounds to me like it's drawing too much amperage.

Use a cleaner like Gunk and shampoo your entire engine compartment with it (at a do-it-yourself car wash). Once everything is clean and all corrosion has been removed by the high pressure spray, you have a chance of seeing problems. Make sure the ground wire (that goes to the block) is clean and rust free. Make sure there is no corrosion hiding in the ends of your battery cables or on the post nuts. If you have a flaky connection, your fuel pump may turn off and on, or the distributor coil (s) may have flaky voltage. Also, make sure that you are using one of the top tier fuels to prevent carbon build up. Whan your car is warm and running, spray some Gum-out through your PCV valve and hoses. Also, remove the air snorkel at the throttle body and clean any muck that has formed here. Watch for any rusty ground wires under the hood and correct them. If this is a fuel injected engine, try to find the fuel injector ground wire(s) and clean them with snadpaper toinsure a good connection. Use Mobil premium at least once to remove engine deposits. Good Luck!!

    HA!

We had the same problem with our Geo Metro with the SAME ENGINE!! It would do this after a long run time then an overnight rest...next morning, no start.

After 6 weeks at the dealer with the service manager driving it home every night, Turned out to be 2 valves would not quite close all the way after it cooled down.

The culprit was cheap gas! It had carbon built up around the valves enough so that after the engine cooled down, the valves were still stuck open slightly making it hard to start.

So, ONLY use TEXACO, SHELL, or CHEVRON, you DO NOT need super (super is for high compression engines only it does not make more power, actually slightly LESS power)

    heres the thing on super...

and the thing on good quality gas....

and you should be using 5w-30 oil in it too.

Like the gentleman said before me said, check the cable that runs from the battery to the starter. Most parts stores can check your starter for free if you take it out.Had that problem myself wound up buying a new starter and found out the cable was bad when I went to change the starter. Are you running summer weight oil in your car??

check for a bad battery cable between the battery and ground and to the starter . if that doesnt fix it you need a starter

Are the battery cables ok? If so i would probably say a bad starter.

Sorry, I don't know anything about fixing cars.

    Good Luck to you.
