The term semi-precious stone is no longer accepted by all the worlds gem trading associations and should NOT be used any more. This information seems to be taking for ever to reach the general public and most jewellers are just as ignorant. The definition has become totally ridiculous today. A good example is chrysoberyl which, under the old system, was classed as semi-precious however the alexandrite variety can sell for $30,000 per carat - hardly semi anything.
All gemstones are precious, some are just not as rare as others.
