Baby screaming...help.?

I am a mom of 3 so I kinda know what I am doing but I am stuck on this one. My youngest just turned 1. It has always been a bit of a chore getting him to sleep through the night. Well for his 1st birthday he got a cold that turned into bronchitis and then turned into pneumonia. We ended up in the hospital for a few days. Anyway while he was so ill the only way I could get him to sleep was to hold him. Well he is all better now. Checked out by the Doc and everything. So now at bed time and all naps I rock him to sleep, and as soon as his body touches his bed he starts screaming. So after a few night of fighting that we decided to let him cry it out. We moved his 3 yr old sister on to our bed room floor so she could sleep and let him cry. Well wouldn't you know that kid screamed ALL NIGHT. We did check on him here and there. Change his pants even give him a bottle. Now we are on day 4 and I just layed him down and he is screaming. I am at a loss. It does not seem to be getting better.

Update:

He only will sleep if I am holding him sitting up in our recliner so cosleeping isnt an option. I tried it.

Update 2:

NO ear infections. I had him checked out.

It is unusual that a baby is crying all night. Since you have had him checked out and the Doctor says he is fine then I would look to something else.

Have you tried gas drops? It may be that he is having gas pains when he is laid down and it is not as bad when he is held. I would give that a go and see if it helps.

Check and make sure he doesn't have an ear infection. Kids who have them will feel okay as long as they aren't completely horizontal, then their ear will begin hurting. I can always tell when my daughter has an ear infection because she'll sleep face down with her legs tucked under her, so her head points down towards the bed a little bit.

The pediatrician's office always said if my baby was crying for more than an hour straight to take them in. That doesn't sound normal ... what baby will cry all night just from not being held?

Gotta love it when you get thrown a curve ball. I would say keep being persistent, he'll understand Eventually that he needs to sleep in his bed. My 8 mos . old does this so after awhile I just lay him in his bed, rub his back, make the shhhh sound until he starts to relax. Sometimes it works, other times I let him scream for 5-10 minutes then rock him again, by then he's so exhausted he passes out. I couldn't imagine ALL night. I hope things get better for you soon.

Being that ill and hospitalized could be traumatizing for a 1 year old baby. I would co-sleep for a couple of weeks and then start weaning him off when all is right in his little world again.

Stay strong. You can try sitting with him, but it may just take letting him scream for a week before he realizes that he is not going to get his way. Don't give in or he may never sleep ok again.

Have you tried to rock him just until he gets droopy but not asleep yet? Then lay him down. Cant guarantee it will work but it might help- maybe he misses the cuddle time from the rocking.
