The papacy moved to Avignon in 1309. The French king, Philip the Fair, pressured Pope Clement V to do so because he wanted more control over the Catholic Church and its policies. Clement was old and sick, and had no power to resist Philip. It returned to Rome in 1377 when Pope Gregory IX became Pope.
