Another history riddle?

I find facts from history interesting...see if you can figure this out.

My great-grandmother was exceptional from first to last. She was the first baby born in the state in 1851. She was almost the first centenarian in the family, but she died in 1950, one day before her 100th birthday.

The cause of her death was not unusual; thousands of people died of the same cause that year and also in previous years. Her death was exceptional because she was the last person ever to die from that cause in the United States.

What was the cause of death?

Update:

Answer:

OLD AGE!

If she had lived just one more day, she wouldn't have died from this.

No American has died of old age since 1951. Old age was "cured" at a Public Health Conference on Records and Statistics. All state and federal agencies were ordered to adopt a standard list of 130 contributing and underlying causes of death. In 1951, the list deleted "old age" as a cause of death.

So, if someone dies peacefully in their sleep at age 95, one or several organs may have shut down and those must be listed as the “official” cause of death. Silly, huh? It’s not legal to list “old age” as a cause of death!

    Riddles About History

Small pox is the right time frame, but according to what I remember about smallpox. the last death was a lady named Janet Parker (English)in 1978 after a lab exposure. The last death in the US happened in 1949 in Texas after 8 people contracted the disease and one died.

So...if she lived in Texas, and the years are a little off, I go with smallpox.

Of note Texas became a state in what 1845. So She must have been born in Califonia wich did become a state in 1850 (September). None became states in 1851. So there were several months between state hood and her birth if she was first born in state in 1851. Unless you mean she was the first that year, not actually the first in the state, ever. That would really get confusing. I am confused enuf now. I'll stop typing....

    you deserve a star however
