Dodge intrepid trans question?

i bought a 94 dodge intrepid with what the owner said was a bad trans. my question is that the car can drive fine sometimes and sometimes it just wont go into gear. ill put it into drive and it will just sit there sometimes. if i give it gas it revs up but it just sits there like its in neutral. i would say a good 90% of the time it dose that is when i start the car and go from park to reverse. if i go from park to drive its fine. when it drops out like that i have to let the car sit for about a half an hour or so until i can get it to go again. it doesnt matter if the car is at running temp or if its cold.

what is wrong with the car?

Update:

the trans fluid looks nice and red could there be just a bad sensor or something

you do need a transmission, cost on this is about 800-1500 bucks depending on where you go and who does it,and that's about all the car is worth, the owner was right that's why he sold it,you can get a real good used one for it ,if you can find one with a good guarantee on it,other wise you,ll have to have that one re-built or buy one,for it,here's a web site that has them pretty cheap and they do ship just about anywhere, good luck on it.http://www.partstrain.com/ShopByVehicle/DODGE

these cars are notorious for burning trannies if you dont change the fluid like every 15000 miles. needs a rebuild the clutches are probably shot inside

IT COULD BE A BAD SENSOR OR THE FILTER COULD BE STOPPED UP OR A LINE COULD BE STOPPED UP KINDA LIKE A FUEL FILTER
