If having millions of illegal aliens employed in the U.S. actually makes things cost less, then why?

does everything cost more in California?

I.C.E. says California has 40% of all illegal aliens in the U.S., far more illegal aliens than any other state, therefore, California's goods and services should cost less. Why are prices for goods and services so much higher in states like California and New York that have large illegal alien populations?

Update:

I live in Ca.

Clearly, the cost of living here is (for the most part) higher than the rest of the US. From the price of eggs to the price of real estate.

Update 2:

I am not saying that because Ca. has a large population of illegal aliens we that live here pay more for everything.

I am asking if illegal aliens really do keep costs down. How does that argument hold water if the largest population of illegal aliens reside in the state with the highest cost of living.

Just trying to make sense of it.

Update 3:

Fast Eddie~~~you used Levi's and Nike's for examples, maybe you need to rethink, your argument..

Levi Strauss & Co. closed 58 US manufacturing plants between 1981 and 1990, sending 25% of its sewing operations overseas. Levi's accelerated US plant closings through the 1990s, closing its last US domestic plant (in San Antonio, Texas) in January 2004.

Most of the factories are located in Asia, including Indonesia, China, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, Philippines, Malaysia, and Republic of Korea. Nike is hesitant to disclose information about the contract companies it works with. However, due to harsh criticism from some organizations like Barbie.com, Nike declared that beginning in 2009 they will begin to provide minimum wages to their workers and full health insurance for every employee that is employed under the Nike Company.

The point is that neither of your examples is made in the USA...

nice try though.

I have NEVER spent less for anything. The cost ALWAYS goes up. According to their Math I should be doing really well. But no-one is. In every state where there is massive illegal immigration....we have higher taxes to support them. What difference does it make if I spend 10 cents less for lettuce but 25 bucks more in taxes? It's still costing me more.

Have any of you spent LESS for a Barbie doll than what your parents did .....even though they get paid a cup of rice for a week to do it? No....it ALWAYS goes up. Everything always goes up. Many times you pay for what used to be free.....you always pay more. In one way or another....you pay.

Unfortunately I don't see the relation between low paid workers (legal or illegal) and the cost of the products they make. Certain prices for products such as produce may be government regulated, but let's face it, the reason things cost more in certain places is because there are people who would pay that much to have it. The true reason for high costs falls back on the laws of supply and demand as well as the drive to make a huge profit. Real estate in NY and CA are high because of the large population in relation to the available property. Hence the reason why a house that could be built for $200,000 can be sold for $750,000. As long as someone is willing to pay for it, it will sell for that or higher. The same goes with other products whether it's cars, clothes, shoes, etc.. Although most of us will say paying $50 for a nice short sleeve shirt is too much, others will say "as long as its polo or lacoste I'll pay even more." In short low wages do not always equal lower costs, but it usually means higher profits. Let's get real. When manufacturers close plants in the US in order to open overseas plants with wages at a tenth of America's minimum wage, their products don't exactly get cheaper, but I bet their profits increased tenfold. Nike afterall still sells the most expensive shoes in the US while their sweatshop workers overseas get pittance.

I agree with fairly smart that they use up our infrastructure but don't put int heir fair share of taxes to help maintain and build new infrastructure. There costing us alot of money because illegal immigrants have cause our state to be overstretched in many key resources. We are in a drought, and it cost a disporportionate amount of money to obtain water far them. Our transportation system is overtaxed as well and it cost money in delays from all the traffic jams.

In agriculture, other states and foreign nations are more likely to benefit from cheap labor from our produce. For some odd reason we rarely get the fruits of our home state. Because our fruits and vegetables are considered higher quality, we end up exporting most of it to states where it commands a higher price or even other countries. Japan would pay over $100 for a case of our cherries. Instead we get cheaper Mexican produce. Frankly I wont buy strawberries in the local supermarket, becaue I can't stand the quality and only buy the stuff from Oxnard. Besides, in agriculture, prices are regulated by supply and demand more than cost of production. Illegal immigrants are not more productive so therefore the prices would only change by the demand of a product. THere are for more demand in California produce now than it was a decade ago. Despite China taking over the garlic industry, they on the other hand havr fell in love with our grapes and nuts and have help cause prices to increase.

As in housing, we won't see any benefit because they counterbalance what ever benefits they provide for cheaper housing. They need to live somewhere and drive up rent or house prices because they increase the demands for those products. For their Janitorial services, the cost savings are negligible, because it is always a small part of any industry.

It does not make things cost less.

Let me give you this example: A contractor can bid less to build a house., though all of the profit goes into his pocket. He does not pass that savings on to the home owner. His bid is lower, but he still makes a profit. Instead of paying a framer 20.00 and hour he can pay that framer10.00 an hour and pocket that profit himself. The contractor next door, not using illegals, he just can not profit as much as the other guy. The savings are not passed on to you. It is what makes the other man $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Great question : Politicians have no clue , businesses have no idea , and Illegals increase their stock in "Western Union" by wiring millions & millions of USD`s into Mexico ! All this while the citizens still don`t get it ? If Illegals work so cheap , and as farmers` say "we must have them to pick the crops", then why is one damn orange costing almost a dollar ?? Something is rotten in America , and it ain`t the fruit !!

As a stupid Brit may I ask a Q? We have millions of immigrants coming here legally and causing untold problems. You, as the greatest nation in the world, the upholders of world peace, leaders in the fight against world domination by terrorists, why are so many people getting into your country illegally? Some years ago, I had to jump through hoops to get a visa to come to your country as a tourist. I was treated like a criminal at passport control, even my money was counted, unused to armed cops I was terrified. I made sure my passport was double stamped on leaving incase they came after me. I had to produce my passport in shops and restaurants despite having "travellers cheques" because of my accent! How the h**l do the "illegals" get away with it? Please do not cite the cheap "workforce", we have the same issue, but how do they get through the "system"?

You are forgetting part of the equation. People working for low pay means it costs less to make the products. However, you don't get to purchase products at cost. You pay the purchase price, and that is set by the company selling the product. If I hire someone for cheap and it now costs $1.00 less to make a product, I'm not about to decrease the sale price by a $1.00 when I can keep charging the same as before and pocket the saved $1.00 as profit.

    It's capitalism great?

You make a very good point, and thank you for doing so. What people don't understand is that, the more illegals there are in your state the more you pay taxes that go towards their welfare checks, or hunting them down for identity theft, or housing them in our prisons, or sending them back where they came from, or paying for their kids to go to school, or paying for their free healthcare. So many expenses we pay for them to have a better life than a lot of American citizens. I don't know how anyone can support people who invade our country, rip us off, commit violent crimes against us, and totally disrespect us in every way they can think of. Its time to send them running home.

  • U ARE Right!!! LOAD UP THE COW BUS and Send them HOME!!! They are not doing what they suppose to do here...Making everything cheap! DEPORT ALL ILLEGALS!

and let me answer that question regarding that 20 millions illegals get deported; well one thing for sure...once 20 millions gone...California wouldn't be in water and power crisis and their prices would go down! as well as rent prices, groceries, housing, health cost, etc.

    less demand = cheaper prices

Good point. The fact is they cause a deficit to any state where they reside. That is why California had a 15 billion dollar shortage last year. The cost to that state to educate, and take care of illegals was 12 billion.
