They will start to wean at 4 weeks of age and should be completely weaned by 8 weeks, possibly even 6. Some may continue to suckle longer just out of habit, if the mother lets them, but they ought to have no need for milk after 8 weeks of age.

  • Puppies should be kept with the mother and allowed to nurse until they are about 8 weeks of age. The mother's milk will begin to decrease at about 5-6 weeks of nursing and the pups will begin looking to puppy food to satisfy their hunger, but the mother and pups should not be separated for 8 weeks (unless there is a medical reason for not having the mother nurse them such as mastitis).

Although they can SURVIVE if weaned by 6 weeks, they will have emotional, psychological, and possibly physical problems from being weaned so early unnecessarily.

Hi, I usually start putting puppy slurry down at 4.5 weeks. The mom usually eats all of it, but the pups may get a taste of it. The dam will naturally wean the pups... usually finishing off by 8 weeks or so ( I only adopt out at 10 weeks). I also offer slurry when mom takes a break starting at 5 weeks. By 8 they are usually mostly on food, but you need to remove mom during feeding time (5 x per day minimum) if she tends to gulp it all down. This is a fairly natural thing, so let the mom set the weaning pace.

I like to start weaning my puppies when they are 4 weeks old. By that time the Dam has usually had enough especialy as the pups' teeth are starting to bite her by this age and it isn't comfortable for her. She must still be allowed to visit her pups if and when she needs to until her milk has dried up completely. She will know when the time is right to wean them completely and will start to growl at her puppies and tell them to back off.

8 weeks but mom will wean them when shes ready, she will begin around 6 weeks, but that doesnt mean the pups are ready to leave her yet. She has a lot to teach them still. So mom will wean, and if you are bottle feeding dont stop till 8 weeks. Pups that have been weaned by mom early should be getting a supplement of canned or powdered formula with there hard kibble. Just to be sure they are getting all the nutrients and vitamins they possibly can. This will prevent problems mentally and physically when they are growing to maturity.

They should be started on puppy food in addition to mama's milk when they are around 4 weeks old. They can be fully weaned between 6 to 8 weeks.

mom will slowly wean them off herself. Do not force the issue.

Around 4-5 weeks they might start showing an interest in mom's food... this is the time to offer "mash" to them. Soak some puppy kibble in warm water and mash it up. As they mature, offer the mash more often.. mom will slowly push them away and let them have less milk.

The Mama Dog will wean them, but after they're 3 weeks or so old, then you could also start doing it, just a hair at a time; as long as you continue to let them Nurse, at the same time. Just start sitting down a bowl of puppy food. Mama will probably be the one to eat it, at first, but the pups will slowly begin, too.

They start weaning earlier but to be completely taken off their Mums milk 6 weeks is OK.
