Hi I'm a veterinary nurse. I registered with Yahoo to try to get people to take their dying animals to a vet instead of sitting in front of a computer. Areas of interest/expertise: + animal weight loss + flea/tick/worm control + small animal (rodent and rabbit) husbandry + neutering + dog behaviour + puppy behaviour/training

  • Why can I only partially inflate my bike tyre?!?

So I went to put a bit of air in my bike tyre the other day and all the air leaked out the valve and I could only inflate it halfway. So I fitted a new inner tube AND bought a new pump.....and the tube still won’t inflate beyond about 10psi!! After I pump up to that level it just seems like no more air will go in. But it doesn’t leak out anywhere either - I returned the next day and it was still sitting there at 10 psi, which is unusable as it should be 50psi. Does anyone have any idea what is happening please?!

  • Why is my credit card interest so low?

I've had only one credit card since I was 18 (so for 10 years) and the interest on it is only 1.313%!

Obviously I'm not complaining but sometimes I worry that this is an unnoticed mistake on the bank's part and they're suddenly going to notice and demand years of payment of unpaid interest........

My credit limit was £500 10 years ago and has gone up to £3000 as I've approached the limit a few times. My balance is currently eeking up and up to nearly £1000 now. Obviously the low interest is fabulous but should I be worried??

  • How would an osteopath treat diabetes, or other non-infectious diseases?

I've been reading the website of The British Institute of Osteopathy and I cannot find any reference to treatment of non-infectious diseases (i.e. those not caused by a bacteria, virus, protozoa, parasite, mould, fungus or yeast).

I was always taught that the definition of 'disease' is 'any undesirable condition of the body or mind". I like this definition because it encompasses everything, from flu to schizophrenia to diabetes to cancer - or even just spots! It's also a definition which should satisfy both 'orthodox' and alternative medical definitions of 'disease'. From this all-encompassing definition of disease I then went on to study pathogenic/infectious disease i.e. those causes by pathogens which infect the body.

From what I've read on this site it seems that if osteopaths understood the basic principles of 'orthodox' medicine they would find both theories actually pretty much agree. The British Institute of Osteopathy seems to think that 'orthodox' medicine is only concerned with eliminating pathogens. Obviously this is not the case; it is well understood that an optimally functioning human body and immune system is able to defend itself adequately against many invaders. Any medicinal approach has to be primarily concerned with keeping a body healthy/an environment clean so that it does not have to cleanse itself.

But what about diseases, like diabetes, that are not infectious - how can osteopathy help? What is the osteopathic theory of how they develop?

  • Antibiotics 4 times a day?

I can't believe I'm actually having to ask this, but if you're taking meds 4 times a day, does this mean every 6 hours, or 4 times during your waking hours?

I was thinking take them at say, 6am 12pm 6pm and 12am - or should I just take them 4 times during the 14 hours I'm awake?

  • Are my venus flytrap seeds going to grow?

I just planted them today following the instructions on the leaflet, but have since read not to use tapwater. Well I did - are they dead for sure, or might they still germinate if I used distilled from now on?!

I have the pot covered with a plastic bag, standing in a tiny saucer (a lid, actually) of water, on a windowsill where it might get a couple of hours of sunlight a day if it's lucky (I live in England). Does this sound OK or is it just completely dumb to plant flytrap seeds in the winter? I couldn't wait! The pot is near a radiator so it will be fairly warm apart from overnight when the heating's off.

  • Do animals have to be gasping their last before people on here get a clue?

Just asked this question in an answer and realised it's a prudent one. Take a look at this:

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/answer?qid=20080...

Course this is far from as bad as it gets. I once read a question from someone who's dog had been 'slightly run over', two broken legs and coughing up blood. They were asking what they should do.

Are there really THAT many people who just don't seem to have heard of vets? Why? In the old days before vets were less prevalent and well known, people would at least approach their own doctors with their dying animals. These days they hop on the computer.

  • Help rearing a baby pigeon please!?

I acquired a baby pigeon this morning, about 3 days old I reckon, eyes not yet open. I've hand reared a thrush before and seen some other birds handreared, but this one is not acting like other birds and it's confusing me! I also cannot find out how often you're supposed to feed the things, some sources say 2-3 times a day, some say 'at least 5' so I'm guessing it'll be closer to that as the bird is so young. Another source said the nutrition the bird got from it's egg will see it through 'the first few days'.

So - am I over or underfeeding it? I've had it 11 hours and fed it 4 times - the first two times with 0.1ml glucose water, the second two with about 0.2ml Tropican (parrot rearing mash). I honestly don't get if it's desperately hungry or desperately trying to get away from the food - once it's in its beak it goes calm and swallows it well, but otherwise goes mental when its touched, squeaking and squirming - I know it sounds silly but it seems more angry than hungry!

  • How do I get rid of this ProPlan pop-up?!?

This stupid ad is making me mad - every time I open a question it jumps across the page and blocks the actual question and won't go away for ages.

Is there a way to get rid of ads that cover up the actual stuff you're reading?

  • Why aren't people spaying their female dogs?

This is a two part question, directed at people who aren't planning to spay OR breed from their female dogs.

    1) What is the reason for your choice not to spay?

    2) Do you know what pyometra is and how common it is?

It's my belief that the veterinary profession it not educating owners enough in the consequences of leaving females intact. Many owners whose dogs get pyometra say they've never even heard of the condition. This is a failing of the veterinary profession to properly educate people. I bet if every dog owner had witnessed a pyometra or mammary cancer, a LOT more dogs would be spayed.

    So, who's fully informed?

  • Where are people getting thi info from? (Hills Pet Foods)?

As everyone knows, Hills has the worst reputation on here. Everyone says it's full of by-products and has corn as the first ingredient. I've never seen a Hills food with by products in it, or with anything other than meat as the first ingredient, except for some of the canine prescription products. Here are some of the Science Diet labels, please take the time to look at them so you can see what I'm talking about:

You need Adobe to view these

This is a fairly random selection - all have meat as first ingredient. Question is - where are people getting their info fro

  • Homeopathic medicines - how does water remember the right substance for it's intended use and forget other...

....substances that it touches? What's the process?

This is a genuine question - I'm not looking for the whole argument for or against the effectiveness of homeopathy, I just want an answer to this question alone.

I am actually trying to find out some of the facts about homeopathy but it just keeps descending into debates. Please focus on the question only!

  • Does anyone know of any double-blind experiments to prove the effectiveness of homeopathy?

I've never heard of any, and I think they're the only way to prove beyond dispute that homeopathy works. Does anyone know of any?

I thought they contained herbs and things. Are there homeopathic remedies that contain water only?

  • Is this a head gasket or a radiator fault?

OK this is a bit of a story...

Nearly a year ago I took my car (a 1994 Rover 214) in to have an electrical fault repaired, and when I went to pick it up the guy showed me the coolant tank was full of oil - well it certainly wasn't when I brought it in, I check that tank regularly! So I cleaned and flushed the tank and hoses, but since then the tank has never been quite free of oil, there's always a bit in it - I cleaned and flushed the whole thing again about a month ago and I think it's been basically clean since, so I figure the guy did pour oil in the tank to get a head gasket job - but can't really be sure. Not the point anyway......

My radiator fins are also pretty rusty and crumbly, but the temperature meter on the car has always been fine so I haven't done anything about it. I check the oil regularly, and I'm as sure as I can be that there's no water getting in there.

Today I check the coolant tank and there appears to be almost nothing in there....

  • Where are people's car horns located?

I had this really annoying argument with someone years ago about this - she insisted that most car horns are located on a stick to the side of the steering wheel. I have NEVER seen this that I'm aware of - aren't most car horns a big button ON the steering wheel?

    Where's yours?

  • De-clawing - has anyone every wondered......?

....... why America is the only country (out of all the MANY countries on planet Earth) that thinks it's acceptable to declaw cats? Has no one ever considered that perhaps, given how outnumbered America is in their belief, just perhaps this practice is a little - uh - backward?

Maybe I'm wrong, maybe America alone is more advanced than the rest of the human race (that was sarcasm).

    Anyone agree?

(obviously this is not directed at the millions of Americans who DON'T agree with declawing, but it's just interesting that everyone who DOES declaw IS American...)
