Windows has an internal Messenger which allows messages to be sent to other computers on the same network. Also, there is Telnet which allows connections on a LAN and across the internet, but hardly anyone uses it any longer because of the security risks of using it. Many people have used Telnet to send viruses and other malware, so lots of users choose to disable Telnet in Services. They also disabled the Windows Messenger in Services or disable it by "removing" it via the Add/Remove applet, and then clicking on Add/Remove Microsoft Components.

You can also install it via that interface too. Just go into the Add/Remove applet, then locate on the left the Add/Remove Microsoft Components, then in the dialog box which appears, click on the Windows Messenger, click Install or Next and just follow the steps.

Now, in order to use Windows Messenger to send messages, other machines also must have it installed and enabled.

What you are asking about limiting your internet connection on the local side of your router is very simple do to. If it is your router and your connection, your router has a configuration page which allows you to limit who gets to use the connection and when. It is called IP address filtering, or whatever your particular router calls it. It should be under the firewall label, or you can simply keep clicking on options until you locate the appropriate page.

Now, you need the IP address of each computer you wish to restrict. Just put in the IP address on the proper line, activate the limits you wish, then click on Submit or Enable, or whatever wording your router uses to make changes to your configurations.

You also have the option of using MAC address filtering. You can add only the MAC addresses you wish to allow to connect to your network, period. It is an all or nothing proposition, unlike the IP filtering. You either enable allow a computer or disallow a computer with the MAC address.

To get either the IP address or the MAC address, you will need to have physical access to those computers and open a command prompt and run the ipconfig /all command.

    Like this:

    ipconfig /all

There is a space between ipconfig and /all. Hit Enter and information of that computers connection will scroll down the page.

Locate both the IP address and the Physical address. The physical address is the MAC address or Media Access Control. Every machine which is connectible on a network has a Media Access Control address placed on the machine by the manufacturer and each is unique, no two are alike, the same as public IP address for internet connectivity. However, there can be Private IP address on a LAN which are not unique on the web, but are unique on each private LAN. MAC address are unique regardless of where they are located.

Now, you can also place a password on your machine which will cause the requirement of entering that password in order to boot the machine at all. In other words, if somebody does not have that password then the machine is not bootable. It will sit at the screen which asks for the password.

You can setup this password in the System Information which you access by tapping a certain key while booting. It should be displayed on your screen as it boots. Mine is F2, some are Delete, and others are other combinations of F keys. To locate your key simply boot and watch for the instructions on how to enter BIOS and System Setup. Write it down, turn off the machine, and then tap that key when you boot and see the manufacturers logo.

When you enter setup, just use the arrow keys to browse around until you locate the area to enter a Administrative Password and a Boot up password, or whatever your system calls it. Enter the password you wish to use to block anyone from accessing your machine, enter it again to confirm, and then exit setup. Now, when you boot your system will request that password before it allows Windows to finish booting.

As you can see there are several ways you can forbid access to your machine and internet connection without buying extra software or hardware.

You could however, also buy a hardware device, such as Internet Cop which sits between your router and network. You can push a single button which deactivates your network until you push it again to activate. The only issue is anyone with physical access to the button can activate the internet connection, which I why I prefer the IP address filtering and MAC address filtering as well as the password requirement to boot up my machines. I use this on machines which hold extremely sensitive data.

Good luck and I hope you succeed in locking out those who are abusing your connection, please have a nice day.

Do you want to stop them using the internet completely or just restrict how much they can dowload? If it's the former, without setting up different user accounts and locking their internet access out I don't see how you can easily do this without resorting to commercial software. What you _could_ look for is some open source firewall software, but you would need a 2nd PC to run this which would sit in between your internal network and your router, so that may not help you. The other thing you could do is to disconnect and hide your router when you aren't using it (though that is a little more drastic) or just talk to your friends?

To send small messages across the network (assuming you're using windows) look at the

    net send

command, though firewalls may block these messages and you don't get confirmation of receipt (if you ned that, look at IM software, there are some open source ones that don't need to access an online server)

Turn on Profiles. (Assuming you have Windows XP) Setup your own account, and password protect it. No one can get into your computer at all without a password.

Text messages cannot be easily sent to another computer unless yu have software to do it. Perhaps the easiest of these is AIM, Yahoo Messanger or ICQ. Easy to install, both parties need the software installed and active, but very easy to use. Simply double click the users' name, type a message and click SEND.

    1. Date one of them for an hour, I'd rather spend an hour with them, then just 1 kiss. 2. E-mail address, so I can keep in contact with them. 3. That's a hard one, but I think I'd rather have Nick say I'm pretty. 4. Meet them and get hugged, that would be amazing! 5. Haha, I love this question and the obvious answer is marry a Jonas. . . either Nick or Joe will do, I'm not that picky lol! Good job, I loved it! Cool Survey! I'd love to see another! Peace Love Jonas! =]
