Question about puppy potty training?
I have a new puppy and am tring to potty train him. I live in an apartment so its alittle more difficult. My problem is that i keep him in a large kennal during the day when I am not at home. Its a large medal kennal although its missing the bottom tray..... <Theres my problem> I have placed cardboard in the bottom and I am trying to train on those pee pee pads while I'm away..... If he misses the pee pee pad it gets on the card board and that just soaks it up and I have to change it everyday! Do you have any other ideas for me to replace that card board or even better ideas on training would be helpful! Kinda new at this!

First question, how long are you leaving him? Unfortunately, 8 hours is too long to be left at home in a crate at 8-12 weeks, especially if you don't want him peeing in the crate.
If you don't mind him peeing in his crate, you *should* be able to buy a replacement tray at Petsmart or online. Here's one: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display...
Good luck!

you can buy the bottom trays for pet supply companies, most are now plastic, so no problem with pee leeking through. I'm not a fan of the pads, prefer newspaper, cheaper and biodegradable. In such a large kennel you could use a litter box with paper in it, could be good for apartment living if you can train him to use it, leave it in the kennel at all times, with the door open during home time, he can go there if in a pinch.

regardless of what you're using you'd have to change it everyday anyway.
If you wanted something for easier clean up. measure the kennel and see if you can get a replacement tray or go to the hardware/home improvement store and look for a washing machine tray--it's a large tray that fits under the washing machine, usually runs in the $30-50 range and place that under the kennel.

First of all, a kennel is supposed to be used as a sleeping area for your dog. When you kennel train a dog it is usually for them to have a place to go when you sleep, or just a safe haven, they will not like the kennel if thats it where they are expected to pee/poop. You need to take him outside regularly since its a puppy. When you are inside place the pad on the floor, not the kennel, when you catch them squatting you pick them up and place them on the pad. You have to do this ALOT for them to learn. But it is pertinent that you take your puppy out often.

i know it sounds a little weird, but one thing you could try is kitty litter. that is if there is enough room under the cage to put some there. if not then try doubling up on the "pee pee" pads. then just slide the dirty one out from under the cage. or try newspaper. if that doesn't work than ask your vet. good luck with your puppy!

There are some really excellent dog training courses out there you can use. Although, be careful - there are some really awful ones too that aren't worth the money. Here's one of the GOOD ones!

well you shouldnt keep him in the kennel for the time you are away...the kennel should be his bed....not a home...
what i mean is...you should corral him in a certain area of the house...by blocking him into this area you are giving him enough room to roam...
he shouldnt be going "restroom" in his crate. this should be his bed while you are away...
what i do is...keep my petey (a yorkie, male) in the kitchen area where it is easier to clean up any messes. this way he has room to walk and eat and poop...but still has his bed (ie, crate)
my petey...has gotten used to it...i let him outside to "potty" once i get home...
leave some music on for him so that he wont get too lonely
also .... the crate should only be big enough for him to get up, turn around, and lay down....
