What is the name of this plant?

My friend gave it to me 8 years ago. It was just few centimeters high. Now it is 40 centimeters high and looks like this:

What's the name of this plant?

Update:

Hi Vinny, thanks for answer. Here are 8 more detailed pictures of the plant: http://tinyurl.com/2bsetn

The leaves are similar like in he pictures from the internet, but stem seems to be different. The stem of the plant has pentagonal crossection.

Hi Nofuchsia, I am in similar situation like you. Youngsters have no patience with me and people of my age know nothing about the internet. So I have to discover everything myself. Those pictures were placed in www.photobucket.com. The first step was that I made an accout at Photobucket. (Maybe there are better sites than Photobucket.) Second step I aploaded the pictures there. Third step I changed the address (link) through http://tinyurl.com/ (Tinyurl makes the address shorter.) Try to make account at Photobuckets or elsewhere, and if you have problem write me and I will answer you in nonbillgates language.

    Hi,

The leaves look exactly like an Avocado plant I have grown from a pit. I can't really tell what the stem looks like though.

I live in North Carolina, US , and I put it outside except for Jan. and Feb. It is now 6 feet tall.

Hi, I thought that I knew about plants until you posted that one. Nurture it well, it looks like you may well get some very exotic flowers and possibly fruit.

Now if you would indulge me, I would like to ask you a question, and its one that I have been asking on this site for two days without success.

How in the simplest of terms, did you attach that link which allowed us to view your plant. The whole world except me knows how to do it, but no one seems to be able to explain it in understandable terms to me.

Despite the number of people who may need bifocals, you do NOT have an Avocado plant.

Could your friend tell you what kind of plant it is?

I have been growing plants for too many years to admit, and I have never seen a stem such as yours has.

You need one of those $100. illustrated plant encyclopedias.

    Good luck.
