Why is it that Africans and Africa is looked down upon in American [United States] culture??
It's true. Why is it that the usa culture tends to overlook that continent [Africa] and it's people?? Why is it that usa classrooms lack to teach students about African history and geography?? [i mean teenagers still think that Africa is a country]. Why is it that [some] black americans tend to disown Africa and their ancestory that traces back to the continent? All in all, Africa is a big continent, one of the largest, yet people still tend to go about it as if it is not there. In general, people are more likely/able to name several countries in Europe and Asia, are more informed and educated about other parts of the world, but when anything comes down to Africa it's shunned as if it were a bad thing. Also, another thing, why is it such a big deal that celebrities abopt children from Africa as if no one has ever done it before?? There are a lot of questions, I know, but any answer will help, thanks :]
Firstly, Krissy, not EVERYONE knows that Africa is a continent....I am African myself, born in Nigeria and came to the US when I was two....and even to this day kids my age [im 18 now] still find that Africa is a country....
Billybob, i totally agree with you....ignorance is a big part, too
Mar, South Africa seems to be the only part of Africa many know [besides like Egypt--which some don't want to be considered part of Africa, Zimbabwe, and Kenya] and i think it is the fact that they adopt from Africa--really do you think they'd make a bigger deal if they adopted a Euorpen kid??
oh yeah....krissy, black history month is tommorrow, but do you really see it more realated to the African aspect of it....and also why is it that it's only twice a year when black/African history is bought up [MLK jr. day and black history month]--how bout the rest of the year--besides that it's closed out and ppl still don't care....it's sad but it's the truth....

From what i understand, it's because the US gov thinks there is nothing they could give that could possibly benefit the US, which is extremely sad. it's also the fact that our "leader" has no interest in them whatsoever which why it is so important that our next leader is more of a humanitarian than a war hawk. There are a few countries in Africa (South Africa) that do better than the rest of the continent but that's generally because they had something to give, like oil, or diamonds. People also look down on them because of the old African Slave stuff. And they don't see the broader sense that just about every continent had slaves of their own ethnicity. Most of the time, people act badly towards Africans because of stereotyping and lack of information. Personally, i find it very sad that people do that. We need to spread the word about all those countries that have the general population in horrible conditions. and there are groups like unicef and invisible children. Oh, if you're curious as to which countries are actually doing somewhat well, try looking up their GDP PPP and there's a few movies you can watch too at the horrible things that have or are happening in Africa: Hotel Rwanda, Sometimes in April, Invisible Children, Blood Diamond...just to name a few
oh also, i can name several countries from africa, europe, and asia as well as point out where they are on a map XD

Ok, well South Africa is a country, which can be kind of confusing to people if they haven't been over it before. I think that Africa's history should be taught just as much as Asia and Europe, but as far as I know it wasn't recorded like Europe's and Asia's. I don't think that means we look down on Africa. I organizations like Live Aide, Red, and all the save Darfur stuff wouldn't be so popular if we did. I don't think it is so much the fact that celebrity adopts a child from an African country as it is that they are adopting a kid.
**edit**
I don't think it would be made into a bigger deal if celebrities adopted from a European country. It is made into a big deal because they chose to bring a child into their life that was already alive, not because the child was from an African country.

During slavery Europeans made sure nothing African came to America except slaves. So any means of culture being passed down was impossible. Today you dont learn about Asia because not many people in America are Asian so you wont learn about Africa because African Americans are not African no more only Europeans could bring their culture and history. Also with out this knowledge of Africa and western media constantly focusing on the negative Africa while putting bad stereotypes and prefering light/white being beautifall from a young age they look down on Africa.
