a fern in a corner, a hedge of blue prince and princess holly ( need both to get the red berries), some marigolds, some wine & roses ( its a flowering shrub, small )
If you have a corner that does not get alot of wind, a Japanese maple is outstanding

Plant hardy phlox in the back, then fill in the front with shorter annuals(petunias, marigolds etc.) The phlox come back every year and are very pretty. But they do need deadheading to rebloom.

depending on your area, but I like ferns, cycads and brohmelliads. most are for shady area though, and can give some very attractive flowers. if you are looking for sunny position, go natives, large variety, again, depends on where you are.
