Coverlet, quilt, duvet, comforter...what's the diff?!?

Ok, so I'm planning on remodeling my bedroom. I've picked out furniture, flooring, even artwork. Now it's all come down to the bedding. I have an idea about the style and color I want, I'm just sort of confused between the difference of a quilt, coverlet, duvet cover and comforter and not sure which set to buy. I want something that's thick enough for the winter months, but not so thick that I suffocate in the summer (yes, I like quilts/duvtes/coverlets/whatever the heck they're called even in the warm weather months!) so if some kind soul could help me out on this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Ten points to the best one; promise! :)

A coverlet could be a regular blanket, those that perhaps have a satin edge on the top and bottom. A quilt is one that is quilted all over, preferably handmade by Grandma. A duvet is like a down or feather spread, and duvet covers are like a slipcover for the feather one because it is expensive to dry clean them so you use a duvet cover so you can wash only the cover. A comforter can be a quilt like top but not quilted, maybe tied at different places or other blankets you buy. I would try to match whatever you buy with the walls. You will have to have something to cover the windows too but you could have a choice of a lot there. Have fun, buy a good one that is nice. Have them open it at the store so you can feel it next to your skin. Does it scratch or is it fuzzy and makes you itch? It is slick and shiny and will slide off the bed? Does it reach the floor, or do you want to hide the side rails with a dust ruffle? You can do it, go for it!

    Coverlet Vs Quilt

    ok...

Coverlet and quilt are very much alike, but a quilt is usually quilted lol...the design is really the only difference. A quilt is going to have all the decorative stitching and most likely, many different fabric types.

A duvet is a relatively thin cover that can fit a (down) comforter inside of it, it usually has a zipper or buttons on one end that you slip the comforter into.

A comforter is the typical thicker, all-one-piece one that is on beds.

For your situation...a duvet will probably be best. You can take the comforter out in the summer and just use the thinner duvet, and add the comforter in the winter! The best kind is to find the ones that come with a comforter that has ties or buttons that actually attach it to the duvet so it won't slide around.

    Good luck!
