On Psalm Wednesdays (when Catholics get an ash like mark on their foreheads) I feel proud coming out of Church showing the world I'm a Catholic and makes me feel loved by God.
I have never been treated differently on that rare day (once a year) but I don't really care if anyone looks at me funny. I feel proud and happy no matter how I'm looked at.
Perhaps it would be more of a hinderance/sacrifice if it were a day to day 'symbol' though.
