new updates about destructive dog!?

I posted this on Monday--- I have a destructive dog and he chewed off the zippers on my fiance's $300 coat today sigh he is destructive even with his own toys-he eats the eyes off even soft fabric ones and tears into them and apart. Any ideas out there how i can get my dog to stop being so destructive with everything? -he has the hard rubber toys as well as ropes and anything you could think of and he is a chihuahua... He gets lots of exercise but seems to love to rip out the eyes of anything... I have the sour spray and it really doesnt work with him so far.. He gets walked like a million times- he always wants to go out and i take him running for about an hour at least once a day!

NEW UPDATES!-OK so i am walking him 4 times a day plus a run... for an hour or more plus his usual times out to go potty..we r and today he dismantled the ps3 and the bluetooth... he ate them! I bought him 3 new toys and he now HAS 12 rubber toys and 5 plush. im at wittys end with him! Any other ideas?

Update:

we dont leave these things setting down he finds them... on cabinets or in drawers and such.. there not on the floor... tv entertainment system up off the ground..

Update 2:

no b/c i dont want him crated for long periods of time... like last night we had to drive 6 hours to chicago and back and then the weather made it 7.5.. so thats a long time

Update 3:

he is a small dog and our vet said he is not supposed to have raw hide they get tangled in intestines... so he has cow hoooves...

Do you crate him when you can't watch him? If you aren't sitting there watching him so you can correct him when he touches things, he is going to continue. Put things up and away, and crate him when you can't watch him.

First, your vet is right. No rawhides. Yes, there are dogs (even small breeds) that are holy terrors when it comes to finding something to destroy. And it may not be anything you are doing wrong or right. As others suggested. Just be glad he does not have the jaws of a pitbull!!!

I understand you do not want to crate long term in a small crate. The crate would need to be large enough to provide room for small food/water bowls, sleep and area he could soil if need. Chi chis cannot go without food/water as long as a sturdier dog could. But that is safer than him chewing on something dangerous while you are gone.

If this is a pup then hopefully he will outgrow as he quits cutting teeth. If adult dog and this has been an ongoing nightmare then you may need to medicate along with retraining. I suggest you look for a herbal/homeopathic formula rather than doggie prozac!! Search online. Bach flower formulas are available for people and pets. Try a natural foods store. You are obviously walking and exercising so he is just a bit neurotic perhaps. Could be poor breeding, seperated from mom/litter too early. Lots of issues.

There is no magic formula and I have fostered 100s of litters and rehabbed so many I lost count. Can't even think about all the things that were destroyed. You cannot watch any pet every moment of every day. Yes, you 'dog proof' your house and any area they can jump up onto--duh! Sit down on floor and look all around from his eye level. That helps.

I don't know how old your dog is, but two of my dogs went through pretty bad teething times and that is why I utilized a crate for unsupervised times/ minimal use of one. That way, you can re-direct them away from things they can't have to things they can. Also, one of mine, as a puppy, chewed eyes off of toys. Once they were adults, over teething for awhile, they stopped doing this.

If your dog is an adult and past teething time, then I'd ask your Vet if he or she would recommend a medication. I say this because I had a dog that ended up on a medication that had a very very serious chewing problem that did not go away and that he could not outgrow.

Also, I don't use crates (what I actually used were kennel cabs) anymore, not after about a year of age. I do have one that I leave open because one of my dogs considers it her den and one of her favorite snoozing spots. The door just stays open for her.

Usually when a dog does that much chewing, it's because he's bored or stressed out and nervous. Dogs can also develop a condition called Separation Anxiety Disorder. They will do things like you could never imagine they are capable of. Take him to the vet, and if it's not medical, the vet can prescribe medication for him, especially if it's separation anxiety disorder. It works wonders and your dog will not only be happy and healthy, but very well behaved. Good luck.

You are giving the dog the wrong things to chew on....toys are okay but this dog needs something better.

go to Pets mart, buy him the biggest American Beef Hide, largest rawhide you can find........really, it wont hurt him..he needs to be distracted from the fabric, rubber toys, he is not satisfied with the stuff......

do not leave the rawhide down unless you are there to supervise the chewing on it....put it away from him, if he is gonna be alone,,,,,,,but the rawhide will give him something with taste and with a stronger sense of chewing something.

trust me this will work....if he eats is in 5 mins, I would move out and let the dog have the house...ha ha

it will work....it will last him along time, and make sure all shoes and clothes are out of his reach from now on......this is only tempting him to leave them down....anything you don't want to lose, put it up....this is only way you will stop it

Ha ha people are stupid. None of our dogs will stay inside. They love being able to run free and do what they want. My family owns like 40 acres in all for most of my family. We just let are dogs run free. They don't leave our land without someone with them. How can people think putting a dog outside will kill them. Geez a few of our dogs have had puppies outside, they all lived. Dogs are made for the outdoors.

You must puppy proof your home. Puppies are biting and chewing machines - for the first year (at least) of their life, the first thing that pops in to their head when they find something is, "Can I chew it?" Prevent this. Put things away and crate him when you cannot watch him. Get him appropriate chew toys and recognize that it's your fault that the puppy is destroying your belongings. If you were supervising him as he needed to be, the destruction would not be happening.

Have you tried taking him to an obedience class? You should try that. I have an overly destructive dog myself and I'm going to start taking him to a trainer because I can't stop him from chewing things either. Good luck!

This sounds more like DAMIAN from the OMEN then a cute little yappie dog..... he's definitely PSYCHO!!!! Maybe if I were you I'd take him to the vet for some PROZAC or something.... he's way out of control lunching on coats and electronic equipment... do you punish him in ANY way for distroying what he does????

    what breed of dog???

generally most dogs are destructive because they are BORED.. they need a job and you havent given them one - this is especially true of the more intelligent breeds

take your dog to obedience lessons.. stimulate his mind by practicing 20 minutes a day... and perhaps go into agilty to further keep him happy

WALKS are NOT ENOUGH - your dog needs MENTAL STIMULATION.. walks move their legs but dont help their mind...
