Why the Lakers Are Now a Serious Title Contender...?
I've seen this place be flooded by morons who insist that that Gasol trade to the Lakers doesn't make them a title threat, but here's why it does.
First off, Gasol will fit right in with the triangle offense. He's a good passer who likes to work from the high post, and he has a high basketball inteliigence. Also, he doesn't tend to work much in the low post, which is where Bynum excels and shoots a ridiculous percentage, so the two won't be in each others' way.
Gasol wants to win, so he shouldn't have a problem deferring to Kobe to lead the team and taking less shots. Odom creates matchup nightmares when you combine his length and ball-handling abilities.
The final line-up will look like this: 7' low post scorer, 7' passer/high post threat, 6'-10" lefty that can ball handle, 6'-6" dominant scorer, and a veteran point guard to stabilize the team. Combined with one of the best benches in the league, and the Lakers are now at least 2nd best in the West behind the Spurs...
I ran out of room before, but I'll continue for a short while.
I'm not saying that the Lakers will win the title - not by any means. I still think that the Spurs are the best in the league, no doubt in my mind until they lose. However, I've seen a recent influx of people taking this opportunity to rag on Kobe and the Lakers, and I read one too many posts with idiots claiming that the Lakers still suck. They don't. They didn't suck before the trade, and their offense may be unstoppable after this recent addition, provided that Bynum comes back healthy and with enough time left for the starters to gel.
Also, to whoever mentioned the bench support, the Lakers already have one of the best benches in the league, with Walton, Farmar, and Turiaf bringing energy and scoring off the bench.

This year I just don't feel like they will be contenders. I think because of their injuries, they won't be, even with Gasol. They were doing very well, but last year or two years ago, they were doing great until Walton and a few others got injured and they just never got their chemistry back. Kobe is finally playing like a team player, but I think these Lakers need a solid, fairly injury-free year (probably next year) to gel right. They will be good in the playoffs, but I just don't see them going all the way this year. I can even see them getting kicked out of the first round. The west is tough this year man. New Orleans, San Antonio, Phoenix, Dallas and the Jazz will most likely beat the Lakers in a 7 game series, or 5 game or whatever. I know the Lakers have done well against them in the regular season, but for now all those teams have more playoff experience and success than the Lakers as a team. Kobe might be able to take over a game or two, but I just don't see the Lakers getting out of the first round unless they face Golden State or someone else who is too inconsistent. I hear where you are coming from though. I think a year together WILL make them contenders next year.

Before the trade they were serious contenders only if Bynum comes back healthy and in playing shape. Dumping Kwame will only help team moral and there will be no discussion who will start at the center position. Gasol brings a strong #2 scoring threat and takes all scoring pressure off Bynum and Odum that should work out well for both. The Lakers still need to find some offensive punch off the bench, Walton, Fisher, Farmer and Turioff are not ready to carry the second unit offensively yet.
Depending on how quickly they get healthy and "gel" together, they are a significant threat in the West.

I incredibly think of that Lakers are the main finished group good now training - quickly element shield he can flow the ball Kobe - debatable the proper participant interior the playoffs Artest - super defender Gasol- perfect 5 skill forward who knows his function Bynum- proper middle considering that Howard is out Jordan Hill is a double double guy, Barnes performs nicely, Blake can shoot threes and Ebanks So why no longer? Lakers have a sturdy probability to win all of it

Wait till the playoffs words mean nothing right now. Yes we know they are a threat but if the lakers end up loosing in the playoffs they will be criticized because of people always talking bout how they will win a title.
