travel insurance rip off?

looking at the small print on many policies reveals anyone suffering from simple medical conditions or taking any prescribed drugs are not covered.

Loads of people take prescription drugs for non serious conditions.

so my question...

1. do you not disclose such information and just book it?

OR do you phone up, be honest and pay for the additional cover?

2. can you recommend a good travel insurance company?

Update:

The fact that insurance companies can get away with charging extra for non serious conditions really annoys me. If it was life threatening fair enough, but this is just a rip off

I suggest quotes from http://www.portwood.co.uk/ If the BIBA contract quotes then call the screening line - they don't charge extra if they will cover the conditions.

(And it's a pretty good policy as well)

(Internet based travel insurance almost always excludes any pre-existing medical conditions - that is because all they can offer you is a cheap price - so have to try and avoid paying claims.)

No it is not - and it is essential. 99% of the problems that cause people to go off the deep end are related to people not reading the policy small print, and not taking some simple steps to understand what they have bought. If you do not understand any part of what you have bought you really should ask. Dare I say, if you buy insuarnce from a travel agent (and despite what people say, they have been selling the stuff since Thomas Cook was a boy, so they do know a bit about it) you should get a simple interpretation of what it is about and a few extra useful tips. Contrary to popular belief, a good travel agent will sell the stuff either at the same price as or just a tad over the average online price. Whatever you do, whatever you do - PLEASE do not start travelling without proper travel insurance.

You must declare everything they ask you or anything you know. Failure to do so will invalidate your insurance. As for them charging more, it may not be the case, but it is better to pay a few more pounds than be stuck with a huge medical bill if things go wrong.

Travelling in Europe if you are from the UK, make sure you have your E111 or equivalent card. That will give you free emergency medical cover within Europe, but if you need further assistance it will be through your insurance.

Do not rely on credit card insurance. They won't entertain any medical conditions. Check before hand with your bank.

When you book any travel insurance you must declare all medication you are on and any medical problems you have or may have had. When it comes to a claim insurance companys will refuse to pay if you have not told the absolute truth, remember that they will have access to all of your medical records.

Some credit cards have travel insurance. They may not cover everything but they do cover some. Check with your credit card company.

Go through an insurance broker. It's free, and they'll be cheaper than the prices offered on the internet comparison sites.

    you have to be honest
