Uses for old beer?

This is a weird one...about a year ago I got a case of beer for a party and only used half of it. I didn't bring it to other parties because it was Old Milwaukee brand and by now it is past all usefullness when it comes to drinking.

I could just throw it out, but I'm too much of a frugal New England Yankee to not want to do SOMETHING with it. However, some kinds of cooking seem like they'd be out, because it's a year old, and it's also Old Milwaukee. I tried making a beer-and-mushroom soup, but that just tasted bad.

So -- would this be palatable enough for beer bread? Or anyone know any other food/drink/culinary use it may have? Or is it just plain too old to ingest, and is there something else I can do with it? Any advice is welcome...

(For the record -- we got Old Milwaukee because we had been throwing a "bad taste" theme party. I'm actually more partial to Abita.)

You're better off using it to kill bugs in the garden.

Why drink it or eat it and get sick?

About all it this point might be a OK for making malt style vinegar since Old Mil is not very hopped. But a lot of work for a product of limited utility.

For cooking, the beverage does not have to be good per SE, but it must be palatable, so as for cooking directly the case is done. I would personally clean my drains with it this time of year in New England as it is not a good time to garden, a "bit" cold.

There is always beer butt chicken. But (no pun intented) I think the beer should be palatable.

You could try to taste it...if it is "off" I would trash it rather than use it. If it just tastes bad because of the brand, use it to make some bread...I kinda like to sub it for water in my bisquick bisquits, and add some cheese and jalapenos. It should be room temp and almost flat.

If nothing else, try to use it mixed with shampoo. Beer gives tremendous body to hair...well, your girlfriend or wife.

Use it in your hair. Mix it with some egg, shampoo as normal, and rinse with the beer and egg wash. Condition as usual.

The beer helps strip out some of the build up of shampoo, the egg is just protein, and the conditioner helps get rid of the smell of beer and egg.

A dish that is wonderful for using up beer is Beef Carbonade. I have made it many times and this is an excellent recipe.

I usually serve it with new potatoes and steamed french style green beans.

OM's are good for Chile or any other cooked food requiring beer. As far as frugal beer goes, OMs are decent. In a pinch I will drink PBR or an OM, and Strohs is pretty good sh**.

you can try beer pancakes beer muffins just follow the directions on the box but substatute the liquid with the beer how a bout a big pot of ham and beans with a can of beer in it I heard it taste good and also degasses them so no toot, toot, tatooten.

  • what's with the thumbs down for the hair tips?? i'm so going to try beer after my shampoo (when i'm drunk, of course)

i would give it to someone who can't afford beer (a bum). i'm sure they'd drink it instead of throwing it out. or you could ship it to the states and i'll give it to my mom and her b/f. that's what they drink because it's so cheap!

and beer goes bad? now i know

  • 1 decade ago

Nope. Sorry, if it had been a week old, after the fizz had gone out of it, it would have been one thing. But a year; well just pour it out for garden bug spray!

  • i know this sounds weird but when you cook a roast chook season it the same as you would normally crack open a beer ( if its a can of course) and put it up the cavity and cook like normal it flavours the chook and you'd be quite suprised at how nice it turns out
