I am intending to sell a car for about £4000. What is the best way to exchange the money for the car?

Obviously cash would be the easiest way! But I wouldnt be happy walking about with that kind of money in my pocket so I wouldnt expect a prospective buyer to do the same.

Are Bankers drafts any good? If so, how do I know I am not getting a fake?

Any ideas would be apreciated

Do not accept a Banker's draft. They are as easy to forge as a normal cheque. Your bank might deposit the money into your account so it will look like the Banker's draft has cleared, but it can bounce weeks later when the bank finally discovers the fraud. When the Banker's draft bounces weeks after you thought it cleared, you will be held responsible. You will not have your money or your car.

Only accept cash. Sell your car to somebody in your area using MarketWall, and do the transaction in cash:

CASH CASH CASH i wouldnt touch a bankers draft, too many people trying to pull a frse one these days and fakes gets better and better unless you keep car till cleared in your account, usual chq clearing times at your bank. An allternative method is for an electronic bank transfer BACS (3day) or CHAPs(1day) there is usually a fee for the latter. It depends whether you feel happy disclosing your bank details.

    Hope this helps

A bankers draft is pretty safe,

There is a fast way of doing money transfer at your bank too.

Ideally you need to not release your car until the money has cleared.

Banker's Drafts, like any piece of paper can be forged. £4000 in £20 notes will easily fit in your inside pocket. I've actually done the actual "money hand-over" in a bank, which is as safe as it gets.

Do the exchange at the bank. When they arrive, go inside & do the transaction right there. There will be plenty of security & they will be recorded in case they decide to commit some sort of fraudulent transaction. If they want to give you a draft, stand there as the bank teller gives it to him to give to you. Then you'll know it wasn't a fake.

of course cash is best and 4K is a lot of money, bankers draft is the best way or you can ask them to wire it to you and then they can pick the car up after the funds have cleared.

The best and safest way to do the money exchange is right there at the bank.

It would take a pretty bold thief to hand you a bad check while you are in a bank.
