Pretty Easy Math Problems!?

Simplify:

6-(2-5)

The answer I got was 6--3

My friend said that's wrong it's 6(-2+5)

Please help..and thanks!

    Your answer is correct in that it handles the part in parentheses first.

    6 - -3 = 6 + 3 = 9

    6 - 2 + 5 = 4 + 5 = 9

    You are right. Remember Order of operations:

    Brackets

    Exponents

    Division

    Multiplication

    Addition

    Subtraction

    So...

    6-(2-5)

    6-(-3)

    *double negative means subtraction because you are subtracting a negative number.

    6+3

    9

    ** why does subtracting make it addition?**

    Think of a line diagram.

    ________________________

    Now subtraction means go the opposite direction

    so go to 6

    _________X____________

    0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11

    Now go the opposite of -3

    __________----->9______

    Simply, do everything in the bracket first. So, 2-5= -3. You are left with 6--3=9.

    Or you can multiply the minus sign by everything in the bracket. So you will get 6-2+5=9.

    By the way, your friend is wrong, not you. =)

    Since 2-5 is in parentheses, you do that first.

    6-(-3)

    Subtracting a negative means you add the numbers, so the answer is 9.

    6 - (2-5)=

    (2-5)= -3

    6 - ( -3)=

    6 + 3=9

    6-(2-5) = 6 -2 - (-5) = 6 -2 +5 = 9

    2(5-3)-7 = 2(2) -7 = 4 -7 = -3

    First step is to do what's in the parantheses.

    2-5=-3

    Then you'd have 6--3, like you said.

    This means it's 6+3 or 9.
