how do you get mold off of your bathroom walls and keep it off?

I am wanting to repaint my bathroom but there is a bit of mold on the upper wall and ceiling. My boyfriend says that the drywall has to be replaced, which is pretty expensive because I don't know how to do it & neither does he. Is there anyway to keep mold off of drywall? Can I sand it off, or use a chemical?

I just painted my bathroom. I went to the Dulux paint website

    www.dulux.com.au

It says to use diluted bleach to wash the walls and roof before painting. This website has really good info about painting. Look in the FAQS section. It will also tell you which paint to use.

Hello Jennifer. I will explain this just a little differently. I am gathering from your question you are not experienced with mold, so I will go step by step.

Make a mix of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. Use a sponge to wash down the entire area. The black mold you see is actually dead. The live mold is not visible, so dont just wash down the black spots,,,the entire area. Wear rubber gloves and glasses, or at least be super careful about not getting bleach/water in your eyes.

Rinse the bleached areas off with plain water now and let it dry.

Feel the wall itself. If it is soft or mushy, it is saturated from the original problem and needs to be replaced. If you can tap on it and it sounds firm, you should be fine. Use another wall in the house to get the "feel", if needed.

Get a gallon of KILZ II prime. Not only is this an excellent prime for the price, but it also helps prevent mold and mildew from coming back. Give the entire area two light coats of prime and let it dry ( overnight will be fine ).

Get your favorite color of latex paint and paint the area.

NOW....the root of the problem has to be addressed. Mold ONLY forms when moisture is left for long periods of time. If you have a bathroom fan in the ceiling, use it. Leave the door open when it is not in use to let it air out. If you dont have a ceiling fan, use a small oscillating fan by the door blowing up. This will keep the area dry so new mold wont form elsewhere.

I know this sounds like a lot to do for a simple problem, but if you do the basics correctly, your problem will be solved permanently and it will look great for a long time.

Remeber that chance favors the prepared mind,

Best of luck to you and I hope you find this useful

The mold is probably there because you dont use your bath fan enough, or it is not venting properly, or maybe you should open the window when you shower. It is not that abnormal at all, and I wouldn't worry too much about it. Apply a bleach / water mixture to the area (50-50 is good, you can go with less bleach). This will kill the mold. Paint the walls with a mold resistant paint.

mix some bleach with water and spray on it. run a fan to dry it out. The big problem is WHY do you have mold. I would bet that you do not have an exhaust fan in this bathroom. You need to install. Cheap and easy. It mounts in the ceiling and wires into your light, so when you turn your lght on it also comes on. It needs to be running whenever you bathe or shower in there. You also need to hook a piece of flexible exhaust duct to the fan and run it over to one of the attic vents so the mildew doesn't start growing in your attic.

Do the bleach thing as suggested, then repaint the wall with mould prevention paint. Works a treat. And you are right about the coldest wall - its probably the coldest wall in the entire house - try keeping the window open a crack all the time.

only one way to do it and you will have the same problem over your stove around the light you need to spray it down with ammonia and do it for a week then paint over it with KILLZ if your paint is white you wont have any trouble and you can have it died and you really need to paint the bbathroom with latex paint to keep moisture out of the drywall

We've had the same problem. We use a bleach solution (sponge it on) to keep it at bay. Hope I helped.
