Where is the van cortland park valve chamber?
I've been pouring over google earth and virtual earth trying to spot it. I found the treatment plant site, in the south-eastern area of the park- across from the cemetary, but I cannot for the life of me locate the valve chamber.
I know its nearly 250 feet below ground, but there has to be a building or something that allows access.
Iam writing a book about nuclear war survivors who end up living in the van cortland valave chamber, since iam not IN nyc I use the earth programs to see it so its realistic when I describe the area...
All I can find in the northern part of the park in the area that seems right is a big greenhouse looking place, with what seems to be potted plants and shrubs for the golf course I guess...

I think that you almost had it - I think that he greenhouses are just for growing plants for the park, but who knows - they may be a cover for other activities. I believe that the Van Cortlandt valve chamber is located in Van Cortland Park near the corners of Katonah Avenue and 242nd Street in Woodlawn Heights. Go to the bus stop turn-around and then walk down the cement path into the park. A few hundred feet down the path you ll see a guard station on the right. The valve chambers are buildings, but they have been built with grass on top of them like bomb shelters so they cannot be easily spotted by satellites. There is a guard at the booth in front, but when I went there and approached he allowed me to walk through. As you approach some of the manhole covers you can hear the water flowing swiftly below. They removed the road from google maps - probably for security reasons. There are cameras everywhere pointed to all of the underground entry points. They clearly don t want anyone entering the water supply buildings. The Hillview Reservoir is similarly protected.
