no, sharks will NOT suffocate if they stop swimming. They are unable to keep afloat in the water column if they stop swimming because they do not have a swim bladder for bouyancy. They are still able to move water over their gills and they do sleep. Next time you are in an aquarium, check out the shark tank and the nurse and leopard sharks chilling on the bottom.

Well almost all sharks have to swim to breath, so they can't stop swimming or they could die. But thats not all sharks. There is a few exceptions

ya they have to or they'll run out of air and now that i think about it, that's a good thing because then they can't stay hidden in one place waiting for me to pass by so they can eat me :| That would be scary.
