What happens if a candidate wins the primary, and then passes on?

Does their VP running mate get it? Do they have everyone vote again? Or do the party delegates just pick whoever they want?

It is up to the party. This has happened several time in US Senate races in the past few elections. If there is still time to change the ballots, the party selects a replacement candidate, often a spouse, or the primary opponent. For President, it would be more difficult. No one would have promoted Dan Quayle to replace George HW Bush in their first election, for instance. But if the VP candidate had been in the primaries, he'd be a likely choice.

In Minnesotta, when Senetor Wellstone died during the campaign, it was too close to the election, and the vote was for a dead guy or a living one. (There was an election in this century where the dead guy won, for US Senate, too.)

Very interesting question. I would assume it would be their VP choice. That would probably be bad for that person.

Oh sorry I read it wrong. They wouldn't have a VP. It would probably go to second or if it wasn't wta they would distribute delegates through the other candidates. But maybe those delegates wouldn't count. Isn't that what happens when someone drops out?

Good question. The primary is not official, so the convention will pick another candidate. If you're asking what happens after the convention, and before the election, hmmm. In 1972, McGovern picked a VP candidate who later was dropped, and he picked another. In 1933, FDR was nearly assassinated after election, but before inauguration. I don't think there is a ruling for what happens if the President-elect dies before he/she takes office. I think that some of these scenarios do not have definite answers.

They dont have a VP yet. The delegates are still pledged (that is all it is about) and the vote itself only helps sway delegates. Most likely (not sure if they are posthumously released or if their agreement dissolves) they will just sidebar to the next most successful candidate.

It's not explained in the constitution (they didn't mention any political party trash), and throughout all of American History it has never happened. I would guess that the VP nominee would become the new nominee, but like I said that's just a guess.

The delegates at the convention vote for a nominee. Those delegates who were awarded to the deceased candidate are free to vote for whom they chose.

I would assume that it goes to the next leader of that party. There is not a running mate yet. It would only make sense and a revote is not logical
