Anyone had recent Epidural Steroid Injections, PLEASE help! :-)?
I've got bulging discs at L4/L5 and L5/S1, the discs are also very dehydrated and deteriorating after years of lifting patients up and down stairs.
I'm only 29, and have been in more or less contiuous back and left leg pain for over a year. I've been on all sorts of painkillers, and am now on opiate skinpatches (BuTrans).
I'm due to have epidural steroid injections next week, and I'm a bit nervous. Has anyone had this done, and if so, what was it like?
Normally I'm quite "tough", i.e. not squemish, and I've watched epidurals done on others, but for some reason I'm getting all jittery, please put my mind at ease! ;-D

Don't be scared, i have similar probs to you and find the epidurals well worth it.
I walked in to the hospital doubled up with my stick and very much in pain....................I came out pain free, walking normally.
When you go in they take your particulars, get you to change into a gown then take you into a theatre.
Don't be scared, the staff are all really down to earth and friendly.
They ask you to get onto the bed and lie on your stomache.
Then they give you an injection to sleep. Within what feels like moments you are woken up and taken back to get changed. Then they fetch you a nice cup of tea/coffee and slice of toast.
They ask you to wait for about 20 mins to make sure you are wide awake then let you go home.
I felt the effects immediately, some people don't.
Don't worry, its nothing, you won't feel a thing, they put a dressing (like an elastoplast) at the base of your spine where the needle was inserted, there is no soreness either.
I am ready to go for another, I really found them a big help.
I was nervous the first time, now its like going to get my nails done.

I have had several epidural steroid injections and they worked great for me. There's nothing to it and the relief is wonderful. I was very scared too but it went well. I have been told tho, that you dont want to have to many of them because over time they will soften your bones.
I did feel a little aggressive or maybe annoyed by things for a few hours afterwards but that wears off. I was told that maybe the steroids cause this. You will be fine and feel so much better , so dont be nervous. It didnt hurt at all !

My dad has these every 6 months. They are fantastic! Dont worry. He get a few months pain free due to them. But he has had quite a few now and has to have a break so like you he is now struggling with the pain and has to take morphine. Go for it! You wont regret it. Its a simple needle into the spine and is just a little uncomfortable.

Will you be put under anestesia (sp?) for the procedure? I've had three injections - two while put under, and one awake. They didn't do any good for me, though, unfortunately. I wish you the best of luck and hope you can find some relief with the injections.
