Question about oxygen sensor?

I have a 2000 mercury grand marquis. the check engine light came on so i took it to auto zone to hook up to the computer. it says that oxygen sensor 2 in bank 1 has a malfunction. will it be ok to drive the car for a few days until i can get it into a shop to be repaired? thanks for reading :0)

First its an emissions issue... the o2 will not effect the car... you could run forever with it like that... if it's a money thing. ALSO, the majority of the time... the sensor is not the trouble, it's something else. So I suggest having it looked at by a mechanic, autozone just wants to sell you parts. That little coder reader they hook up is not worth a dime... Good luck!

Dont just replace the sensor because it says the oxygen sensor 2 in bank 1 has a malfunction. A professional technician would test the sensor first. There are other things in teh circuit besides the sensor that could be giving the sensor wrong readings. Codes are just there to serve as a starting point. The sensor is tested with an ohm meter and heat.

It'll be fine to drive with a bad sensor. I used to take mine out when I was a kid and drive around just to see how it sounded and I've known other to drive around with broken sensors. Our cars ran fine before and after... fuel consumption wasnt all that great but... hey, it was 95 cents a gallon...

With a four cylinder engine, the code definition should have read: B1S1 (for the upstream sensor responsible for fuel/air ratio monitoring) or B1S2 (for the sensor downstream of the catalytic converter, which only monitors that part). If you changed the front (S1) sensor and you still have a code for it, save your old sensor as there may be nothing wrong with it. If the code is for the O2 sensor heater, check your fuses. If not, the code is probably a symptom of another problem, such as a misfire, restricted fuel filter or intake air leak. Is this the same code you got previously? Did you install a direct-fit replacement or a universal sensor that had to be configured for your honda's wiring connector?

bank 1 is the first sensor firstly before the cat not after! The sensor will be ok to run for a few days but i would change it sooner rather than later so minimalising any damage to the catalic convertor. The sensors are running in extreme conditions and ideally should be replaced every 2 years. The light will need switching off after replacing it.

replace the sensor or sensors they vary in price

since the catylitic converter burns off remaining fuel the oxygen sensor test the oxygen.

The car is 8 yrs old. time for a new sensor.

they can become dirty or fouled and send incorrect messages to the computer which in turn causes the check engine light to come on.

there is no resetting after the sensor is replaced and the cel should go off automatically

    Hope this helps

Yes it will be ok to drive a few days. It actually will be alright to drive longer, just don't forget to get it done. Overtime this could cause damage to the car. I recommend changing all the sensors at once while the car is at the shop. Whichever you choose.

Probably ok to drive for few days, but you may want to consider replacing both sensors at that time instead of just one.

You should have it checked by a good reliable mechanic. The sensor may, or may not be the trouble. It may be doing it's job, something else may be wrong.

that sensor is the o2 just after the catalytic convertor.just dont drive too much.
