What is wrong with my Shih-tzu ?
His name is Buddy and he will be 4 in May of this year. He has been to vets through the years and to an animal hospital. He started to turn aggressive at 10 months for some reason. When you would pet him, he started growling. If you took something away from him that he did not need to have (chewing on the waterhose, taking his empty plate to be washed) etc he will charge at you like a rageing pit bull, no joke. He bit my leg and made it bleed because I took a sock from him that I accidently dropped on the floor. My vet said he was alpha, but I think something is going on in his head that is not right. I have spent so much money on this dog to no avail. The animal hospital put him on Prozac, and it calmed him down for a month and a half and now he is starting to be aggressive again. This dog has been loved unconditionally. I bought him when he was 8 weeks, has never been hit, and is spoiled rotten. What can I do? I'm starting to run out of options. Vet now suggest shock collar
Yes Buddy was neutered at a year old.

You answered your own question: "has never been hit, and is spoiled rotten". It's time to show him some tough love, if you don't he is going to hurt someone and he'll have to be put down.

First of all a vet that suggests a shock collar is not a very good vet... you need to establish that his behavior is not going to be tolerated...
you need to seek out a professional for behavior training... If you truly want to help your dog seek out a professional... I work with veterinarians everyday... 9 times out of 10 their specialty is medicine not behavior! So go to someone that can help the behavior.

You should stop spoiling it. Just give it all that it needs and leave it alone for a while. I, in fact, have an almost 10 year old golden retrever and she has been so gentle and is VERY smart. We dont spoil her to much, so thats why I am suggesting that you stop spoiling your dog. This might actually work, but if it dosnt, then Im not sure what you should do.

I have had great success with a choker,I know, you probably hate that idea but is very effective. Start with the proper size.
Leave it on him all the time at first, pull it up and restrict his air for 3 or4 seconds while you correct him! do this every time you cant do it here and there. He will get the idea and when he understands it you will be able to remove the choker(a few weeks maybe less). If he rebounds start over. It will work,It's tough love, trainers use it!!!!

Sounds like he needs intensive training. You mention that he has had his regular vet visits etc..but not wether or not he had any obedience training.
A good trainer can look at what is triggering his aggression and help you remedy it.

I suggest take him to obedience school. Check to make sure all of his shots are all up to date [like rabies.] Is he fixed? That could be the cause of him being aggresive.
