Family Guy: What's Up With The Black Jokes?

What’s the deal with the one sided comments about black people? I mean, don’t get me wrong, Family Guy is funny as hell and I own every season (1-6) available and possibly my all time favorite (comedy) TV Show. Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy creator) is extremely intelligent, talented, and hilarious. But I think he throws super "low blows" towards black people. And I know the show is just an illustrated reflection of what America really looks like, but dang....

Whatever the case may be, I'm still going to watch the show regardless, because of its brilliance & stupidity (yes.....an oxymoron). I was just wondering why everytime we see a black person on the show they are portrayed with the same characteristics, as if we all act this way.

P.S: I'm not saying that all he talks about is black people (because he talks about Asians, Christians, Celebrities, etc) but the ONLY jokes he makes about black people, is the fact that they're black (as if that’s our only purpose in life) Lol

Umm. You must be watching the episodes when they DONT make black jokes. I mean, "Black To The Future", That Al Roker look alike that says a sentence fast as a cliche, even a whole episode in which Peter finds out he has a black ancestor. If you hadnt noticed this, then you arent that much of a Family Guy watcher. I watch basically every episode of it and they made jokes towards everytime from Black people to Pedohphilles. But the jokes they make about the black community aint enough to deem Seth MacFarlane and the writers of Family Guy racist. So theyre not afraid really, more like, they know not to go too far to not set off anything that will involve them kissing Jesse Jackson's a s s. There has been a time when Seth didnt show an episode that pretty much made fun of the Jewish community in their own way. But when shown on Adult Swim. It didnt do much damage at all.

I love the show. I watch it even though they are heavier on the black jokes than everyone else. Before you say that I am overreacting, take a look at the shows. They always in include 2-3 black jokes, and all other jokes are averaged out.

example: 1 episode will contain 2, black jokes, 1 Asian Joke, 1 Handicapped Joke 1 Latino Joke.

The next episode will contain 2-3 black jokes, one Jewish, joke, one poor white joke, 1 Middle Eastern joke, and perhaps 1 latino joke. The next will contain 2 black jokes, one Amish joke, and one Russian joke. You see where I m going here. Bottom line is if this were to be put on a pie chart the black jokes would far outnumber everything else on average. I like the show, but sometimes just leave black people alone, or spread the jokes out more evenly.

I agree, I love the show but sometimes it really makes me cringe!

And just because they make fun of other groups too, does that really make it ok?

    Equal-opportunity racism is still racism.

I think you're right, he tries to make fun of stereotypes and is usually successful. Sometimes though, it really does cross the line. I'm not being PC, I'm being honest.

(To the haters of the PC movement - do you at least believe that there's a line somewhere? Or do you think you should be able to say whatever you want whenever? Personally I feel like there has to be a line somewhere, for everybody. It's only civilized)

Yeah, I think sometimes it goes a little far. But I think you answered your own question; That it's just an illustration of what america and americans (and most of the world, really) are like towards a man or woman from another race or skin color.

Family guy is really funny, but sometimes it goes just a little too far.

but then, isn't that what makes family guy so funny?

Well I LOVE Family Guy it's so hilarious... I don't really remember any jokes about blacks, but he makes little jokes about everyone! If it really did hurt your feelings or whatever just send him a letter/ call him if you can... He's a busy guy. Although he isn't focusing on blacks because he makes fun of celebrities asains japanese people christians jews you name it. He probobly doesn't mean to focus on you. What about the constant Irish jokes? Gay jokes? Disabled jokes? It's not just blacks he picks on, it's equal opportunity bashing on that show. He is very intelligent by making fun of the human sociaty and everyone in it...it's just....funny! Hope this helps :)

Lol that is true, but i mean it is just comedy and a reflection of American society.

But the terrible, yet funny part was when Peter got in touch with his feminine side, and wanted to blame men for everything wrong with the world, and it just so happens he interrupted the black people and blamed them, ha ....just terrible

  • K Seth Macfarlane is just trying to entertain people, and I think he doesn't really care about what other people may think except for he audience that enjoys his jokes! I also think it's kinda mean but you know, I guess he's desperate for some lolz, but he also makes fun of religions with his jesus, moses and jew jokes!

I like to watch Family Guy as well. I like the show and everything but I don't think they have to make racial comments just to be funny.
