cultural differences/difficulties experienced by brits emigrating to southern US states?
Hi
Later in the year I'll be moving to Houston, TX to join my father and American family.
I am in my mid 20's; my father spent a large proportion of my childhood in the USA and is now a US citizen.
I'm really looking forward to building a life out there, I am completely in love with Texas - but I am aware I view it with rose-tinted glasses. After all; I've only ever holidayed there - when I move I'll be living and working eating and sleeping the lifestyle.
Are there any ex-pats who have had negative experiences? Do you ever feel like an outsider, or is the southern welcome extended 24/7?
How does the business world compare? Do they have different office etiquette?
Overall, is the British stereotype a positive one in American eyes?
I know I have asked a lot of questions - I'm grateful for any answers you can find time to offer. Thanks!
(Just need to mention that I will be entering and working legally so no sod-off-back-home messages please)

I can't give you any advice at all, however, you do seem to have your head screwed on Okay, and you do realise, that a holiday, and working can be a completely different scenario, I do believe however, that U K women do seem to do particularly well in the U S, according to some friends of mine, that have just come back from the States, after a two year stint of work there.
Good Luck.

I'm a US citizen who's spent some time in Texas. It is a pretty religious state as I'm sure you already know. I would say over all there is a pretty positive view of the British, and I've always felt welcome down there. I can't say much about the business world because I haven't worked there.

In the United States everything is spaced out because we are not overpopulated. It is necessary to have a car because the bus service isn't good at all, at least not where I lived.
I am from the United States and I moved to Britain in September. The two countries are not different.
I don't think you will have any problems with violence or harrassment because of your nationality.

Well I'm from TX and honestly it depends on which part of the Houston area you go..
On the outskirts on I-45 you have Montgomery county, they are full of racist white rednecks that don't like ANYONE who is not southern white baptist..
They even burned a cross in my dad's co-workers yard cause he was from the north, AND HE IS WHITE!! You will see some people still fighting the Civil War...it's ridiculous
Of course their is crime, it's a big city..
I'm from the rural area, I think that in TX you just have to know what places to avoid and which ones that will accept you... just like ANY other state in the USA
