Are Bulletproof Vests Available To The Public?
I was wondering if anyone can buy a bulletproof vest; or are they not sold at all in the public market?

Hello Lauren. Some incredible answers here on this issue. Yes, you can buy ballistic vests legally. Whether you can wear them and where you can have them on is an issue of your local and state laws. You would need to check on that so you wont get into trouble for lack of knowledge. As one poster says, you should get fitted correctly, but if you are looking for a level II or IIA with velcro wraps, you can come close on your own.
Go on eBay and run a search for "ballistic vest". You will literally see several dozen for sale at any point in time ranging from a starting price of $75 on up. It is open bidding, but the finish prices are usually lower than store costs. Most of them are used. Read the conditions listed in the ads.
Good luck to you and I hope this helps somewhat.

There are no terribly useful bulletproof vests available in America on the open market. The best you can get are police issue vests in states that havent outlawed them, but even they arent military quality, and arent good for much at all with out the steel trauma plates installed. You may be able to order a military body armor on the internet, or even better you could order a very high priced suit of "Dragon Skin" body armor. Look it up on the internet, you should be able to order one of them. They are good enough to stop the shrapnel from a grenade blast. The only other option would be for you to make it yourself, which you could figure out how to do if you researched it on the internet.

If the government allows the general public to own guns, then they should be and are allowed to have bullet proof vests. The question is should the general public be allowed to own weapons that kill? Even the most innocent of people who own hand guns, who have them hidden, etc., unfortunately are too often found by children who think they're toys and end up shooting themselves, or playmates. Guns are weapons that kill period. They should be out lawed. Not that having guns out lawed are going to stop criminals from having access to guns, but it's a start. People who own guns, or rifles for hunting should be made to register the guns with the police, or some other governmental agency. If the guns are found to be a weapon that killed a person, even if the owner had nothing to do with it loses his/her abily to own them from that point on. It's called LOGIC.

No they aren't, unless you try something like Quartermaster or Galls online...but usually body armor is not sold to civilians...UNLESS you have a legitimate reason to have them, such as being a security guard with the appropriate permits...and then they are very expensive..at least $800 for a Level 2.
For a proper fit and good protection you have to be measured, and that can only be done at an uniform shop, and again, with the appropriate permits and such.

Yes, you can buy a vest ... the cheapest I've ever seen them is $600. They're made of thin layers of rubber that are meant to absorb the impact of the bullet, and they weigh usually 10-20 pounds - the lighter ones are more expensive. They're hot and uncomfortable and you'll sweat all winter in them.
They don't stop knives - unless you have the metal plates, which are waaay heavier.
Check out a police officer supplier if you want one.

No, Most states have laws governing the use and wearing of bullet-resistant vest.. they are no "bullet proof" because SOME bullets will penetrate the vest.
SO to answer your question, no they are not sold on the public market or Wal-Mart couldnt keep enough of them in from all of the dope dealers buying them up!

That would be so wrong if they didn't give a damn about everyone else to not offer them. That wouldn't be fair.
