Is it a custom at a funeral for an east indian to invite the congregation to view the cremation??

More than likely you wouldn't have "viewed" the cremation while it was in progress.

Crematories do "Placements"

A placement is where the families and friends gather in the retort room. The decedent is generally in a casket or a cardboard cremation container, on top of an electric lift.

Prayers are recited, people say their last goodbyes..and then we push the casket into the chamber. Generally, the oldest son (or oldest daughter, I suppose) pushes the button that turns the burners on.

In most states it is illegal to allow anyone other than employees of the facilities to view a decedent during the process. Not to mention unethical. You don't want to see your loved one on fire. It isn't a pretty thing.

Indians and Asians are renowned for having beautiful placement ceremonies. They really go for the gusto..and a lot of the time spare no expense.

I think it is, I know they do it in India. Here in America it maybe different, I'd check with the family.
