Is renting a motor home for travel thru the UK country side a good idea?
I'm from the USA, and thinking of taking a trip to the
United Kingdom with my wife.
Were excited about the seeing the history of the land that
our Great Great Grandparents came from
in both England and Scotland, plus time allowing Ireland.
Plus we would like to see some old castles and other
ruins like Stonehenge, and ancient battle fields, etc. etc.
I am very familiar with motor homes and RV's in general.
So would renting a motor home to tour the UK be a good idea?
What about camp grounds, or open land camping?
Not to mention the safety of sleeping at night in a strange country in a motor home?
Or would I be better off, renting a car, and staying in hotels?
Any advise you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Caravaning (British term for RVing) is quite popular in the summer all over Britain. There are a lot of campgrounds - and it seems to be rather family oriented from what I can tell.
Just remember - you will be driving on the left-hand side of the road and that gasoline is very expensive (roughly $5-$6/gallon). (I assume from your screen name that you are USMC - so if you have been in Japan - it shouldn't be a problem for you.)
Also, some of the roads are very narrow - and you may find it difficult to get past some on-coming vehicles on side-roads.

Yes it would be a great idea, in-fact it is probably the way to go about touring the UK, there are plenty of camp grounds etc, as for safety, your just going to be as safe as you will be in any other country if you do this. and most camp site have night security, even if you just picked a side road you should be fine.

It's a great idea. There are far too many Beautiful parts of Britain to see, and staying B&B, is gonna be very expensive. There are many many campsites in Britain, and I would reccommend you use one, instead of camping along the roadside, for safety's sake. I would reccomend staying a hotel, or B&B,whilst staying in the big Cities, but our Countryside is very safe, and very Beautiful. It's something I have always fancied doing in the States, and will one day. Enjoy our Beautiful Country, and try and fit in a ride down to Cornwall. It too is very beautiful.

depending what time of year you are travelling, if its summertime, a campervan and tents would be excellent idea to travel the countryside and stuff.
If its nearer winter time, id book hotels. It gets rather cold here in winter, and rainy.
If you decide on the campervan, it might be best to plan where you are going to park it each night to sleep, as some parts you might need to get a camping badge in advance.
I think there is a campng club online which you can join, and you get a membership to all the camp sites in UK.
Good luck.

i ought to absolutely do some thing like that i think of. that's a thoroughly rational desire to desire to work out the country with the comforts of domicile. besides the undeniable fact that it delivers some threat, a lot of human beings of their retirement years stay happy lives of their motor homes.
